Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Tropheops sp. "Mbenji Yellow" is an informal, undescribed taxon: no authority, no publication date, no entry under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Its trade name follows the standard locality-plus-colour convention for undescribed Tropheops — Mbenji Island, its type locality, and "Yellow" for the observed male body colour. Mbenji Island is a small, isolated offshore reef well out from the mainland shore, and its geographic isolation has produced a number of locally endemic mbuna forms across different genera; this Tropheops is treated as one such isolated population, with no confirmed relationship to any formally described species pending taxonomic review. Isolated offshore reefs of this kind are a recurring theme in Lake Malawi mbuna taxonomy: separated from the mainland by open water that few rock-dwelling cichlids will cross, they tend to accumulate their own locally distinct populations over time, and Mbenji Island's documented endemics across several genera fit that broader pattern.

Morphology

This form carries the genus's standard body plan: a short, deep, laterally compressed mbuna body, steep forehead, and small, downturned mouth for grazing algae at a steep angle against rock. "Yellow," the documented basis for its name, indicates dominant males present a yellow body colour; beyond that, no detailed published pattern description exists for this specific population, and none is invented here. Females and subordinate males are expected to be plainer, following the genus-wide pattern. Size is presumed genus-typical, roughly 3.5–4.5 in TL. The outer jaw carries the genus's diagnostic row of bicuspid teeth backed by smaller tricuspid teeth further back in the mouth, an arrangement suited to shearing algal filaments from rock rather than crushing hard prey, and one of the anatomical features used to place a Tropheops population in the genus before colour or locality is even considered.

Habitat

Mbenji Island and Fuawe Island form an isolated reef system in the west-central part of Lake Malawi, set apart from the mainland shore by open water — a degree of isolation that has favoured the evolution of several locally endemic mbuna populations found nowhere else in the lake. As with other Tropheops, this form is expected to occupy wave-washed and intermediate rocky habitat in the well-lit upper water column, grazing exposed rock. Water chemistry matches Lake Malawi generally: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Mbenji Island's isolation, set apart from the mainland by open water that few rock-dwelling cichlids will cross, is the same broad pattern seen at other offshore Lake Malawi reefs that have produced their own locally endemic mbuna populations.

Feeding

Tropheops as a genus is a specialist algae grazer, using a steep, downturned mouth to rasp the algal mat from rock at a near-vertical angle. "Mbenji Yellow" is expected to follow this feeding pattern, though no study specific to this population has been published. Feeding-bone studies across the genus (Conith et al. 2020, BMC Evolutionary Biology) show that jaw and pharyngeal shape shift measurably with the depth and angle a population feeds at, evidence that Tropheops as a whole sits under real selective pressure to specialise its grazing posture reef by reef. Aufwuchs itself is not pure algae: it is a mixed mat of diatoms, filamentous algae, cyanobacteria, and the small invertebrates living within it, so even a strict grazer takes in a meaningful amount of animal protein incidentally. Feeding territories in this genus double as spawning sites, which is why males defend them so persistently against both feeding competitors and rival suitors.

Mating

Breeding is presumed to follow the standard Tropheops pattern of territorial, polygynous males in yellow nuptial colour displaying from a patch of rock to visiting females. No behavioural account specific to this population exists. Because neighbouring Tropheops populations at different reefs often carry visually distinct male colours despite being difficult to separate by body shape alone, colour is thought to function as a mate-recognition cue that limits hybridisation between look-alike forms — a pattern documented across the mbuna radiation generally and one reason Malawi cichlid taxonomy leans so heavily on live colour photographs from the collection site. Male aggression toward rival Tropheops, including toward similarly coloured intruders of other genera, is a defining feature of life on a crowded reef, and much of a dominant male's energy budget goes into defending his patch of rock rather than foraging widely.

Breeding

Tropheops sp. "Mbenji Yellow" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Tropheops, with the female carrying eggs in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry and no further role for the male. Clutch size has not been documented for this form. Tropheops gracilior, the best-studied species in the genus, is documented brooding for about 25 days, a figure used across the genus as a working benchmark in the absence of species-specific data. The brooding female typically stops feeding almost entirely for most of this period, drawing on stored reserves, and will hold the clutch in her mouth even under stress before finally releasing free-swimming fry that are already capable of independent feeding. Tropheops in general breed readily once established in captivity, which is part of why locality-specific forms have proliferated in the hobby even without formal descriptions to back them.

In the aquarium

"Mbenji Yellow" is kept by aquarists specifically interested in this isolated island's endemic locality forms. It should be housed on the standard mbuna template: dense rockwork with broken sightlines, a tank of at least 47 in, and enough females per territorial male to spread aggression. Water should be warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Diet should stay predominantly vegetable-based — spirulina flake or pellet with occasional blanched greens — to avoid the elevated Malawi bloat risk that high-protein feeding causes in grazing mbuna. Because Mbenji Island's isolation has produced several distinct yellow-toned mbuna forms, keepers should confirm provenance carefully if maintaining a documented line.

Conservation

Tropheops sp. "Mbenji Yellow" has no IUCN Red List assessment: it has never been formally described and has no valid scientific name to assess. This reflects its taxonomic status, not its population health. As a mbuna endemic to a single small, isolated offshore island, its total range is inherently narrow, which makes it more exposed than lake-wide species to localised pressures such as targeted aquarium collection, even though no specific threat has been documented for this form. Because Mbenji Island's isolation has produced several locally endemic mbuna across different genera, the reef as a whole is a documented hotspot of narrow-range biodiversity, which argues for caution in how heavily any single form there is collected, even absent a specific population study.
