Taxonomy & naming
Tropheops sp. "Red Fin" has no formal scientific name. The informal designation "Pseudotropheus sp. 'tropheops red fin'" was coined in 1983 by A.J. Ribbink and co-workers in their pioneering field survey of Lake Malawi's rocky-shore cichlids, based on specimens from the population at Ruarwe on the Malawian coast — one of the first mbuna trade names ever put into print. At the time the mbuna assigned to "Tropheops" were still generally lumped under the older genus Pseudotropheus; the modern convention places this fish in Tropheops on the strength of its blunt head and comb-like dentition, shared with the type species of that genus. A closely related, more northerly population was later judged different enough by Ad Konings to warrant its own separate trade name, "Tropheops sp. 'Chilumba,'" splitting off the fish found from Chitande Island to Mphanga Rocks from the "true" Red Fin population further south. Neither form has ever received a validly published description, so no authority or date should be attached to either.
Morphology
A compact, blunt-headed mbuna on the standard Tropheops build, with the thick lips and closely packed rows of comb-like teeth used to scrape algae from rock. The name "Red Fin" refers to the orange-red colouration of the anal fin and lower half of the tail, present in juveniles and females and persisting into the intermediate phase of male development. Colour changes through a well-documented sequence: juveniles are essentially white, developing into an intermediate phase with dark vertical bars over a pale grey-blue ground colour, before culminating in the fully mature male pattern of deep orange or orange-blue with reduced barring. In some populations much of the barred pattern persists even in fully grown males, with only limited orange restricted to the upper body — a degree of individual and population variation typical of Tropheops. Deep, saturated orange is seen only in fully mature, dominant males.
Habitat
This form occupies the rocky habitat typical of Tropheops, recorded from both the Malawian coast and, more recently, the Tanzanian shore on the opposite side of the lake, as well as sites in Mozambique — a genuinely wide distribution for a rock-associated mbuna, even though it is patchy rather than continuous within that range. Territorial males defend sites in rocky habitat close to sand, typically at depths greater than 10 metres, while females and juveniles range somewhat shallower, foraging on the aufwuchs-covered rock of the intermediate zone. Notably, on the Malawian coast the species does not occur north of Hora Mhango or south of Mara Rocks, even though similar rocky habitat is available beyond those points — a pattern of sharply bounded distribution common among Lake Malawi's rock-dwelling cichlids and a reminder that suitable habitat alone does not predict where a mbuna population will actually be found.
Feeding
Tropheops sp. "Red Fin" grazes aufwuchs — the mixed film of algae, diatoms, and associated micro-invertebrates — from the surface of rocks, using the genus's characteristic comb-like outer teeth to scrape material loose. This is the standard feeding mode for Tropheops and most other rock-dwelling mbuna, and it ties the fish closely to sunlit, algae-rich rock in the intermediate to shallow zone. Juveniles and non-territorial fish forage more freely across open rock surfaces, while territorial males defend patches of productive algal turf as both a feeding resource and a display site.
Mating
Breeding follows the standard mbuna pattern of male territoriality and female choice. Dominant males hold and defend small territories among rocks near the sand interface, where they display their breeding colouration to attract passing females; there is no pair bond, and a successful male may spawn with multiple females visiting his territory in turn. Ribbink and colleagues' original 1983 fieldwork on this form was part of the broader study establishing this territorial, lek-like mating system as typical of Lake Malawi's rock-dwelling cichlids generally.
Breeding
As in all Lake Malawi cichlids, breeding is by maternal mouthbrooding. After courtship at the male's territory, the female releases a small number of eggs and takes them into her mouth almost immediately; she is drawn to the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin and, in mouthing at them, takes in sperm that fertilises the clutch already held in her mouth. She then broods the eggs and larvae for roughly three to four weeks without feeding significantly, releasing free-swimming fry that receive no further parental care. Clutch size has not been documented specifically for this form, but by analogy with similarly sized Tropheops it is likely modest, on the order of a few dozen eggs.
In the aquarium
Tropheops sp. "Red Fin" is kept as a classic mbuna community fish, valued for the colour contrast between its blue-black or orange body and the red-orange fin markings that give it its name. A rock-dominated tank with a base of fine sand suits it well; rockwork should be arranged into distinct piles with clear sightline breaks so that a dominant male's territory does not extend across the whole tank. A footprint of at least 47 in is a sensible minimum for a harem group.
Water should mirror Lake Malawi conditions: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, and moderately hard to hard water, held stable rather than fluctuating. As with most mbuna, diet should lean vegetable — a spirulina-based flake or pellet as the staple, with only occasional protein-rich foods, since a high-protein diet is strongly linked to bloat in this group. One male to several females is the standard stocking ratio; a lone male without enough females to spread his attention will harass tankmates.
Conservation
Tropheops sp. "Red Fin" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form without a formal scientific name, has no Red List assessment of any kind. Its distribution spans multiple countries and a considerable stretch of shoreline, but within that range it occurs only at specific rocky sites rather than continuously, the typical pattern for Lake Malawi's rock-dwelling cichlids. Locally restricted mbuna populations of this kind can be depleted by concentrated ornamental collecting even when the species as a whole is not rare, so captive-bred stock remains the more sustainable source for the aquarium trade. No formal conservation status should be attached to it pending a taxonomic description.
