Copadichromis sp. "Lupingu Blue" is not a formally described species. It has no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes. The trade name follows the standard convention for an undescribed Copadichromis — genus, "sp.," and a descriptive tag — here a straightforward pairing of the collecting locality, Lupingu, with a colour qualifier, "Blue." Lupingu is a well-documented collecting site on the Tanzanian shore, also recorded for locality forms of the much more common Copadichromis borleyi and Copadichromis trewavasae, which places this population in a genuinely productive stretch of reef rather than an obscure one. Copadichromis as a whole belongs to the "utaka" guild that Eccles and Trewavas placed in the genus in their 1989 revision, and it is notoriously difficult to sort by eye: many species and colour forms look alike outside breeding dress, and this population’s trade name carries no borrowed epithet linking it to any specific described relative.
Morphology
This form is expected to share the fusiform, silvery build typical of the open-water utaka. Size has not been documented for this population specifically; genus-typical utaka of this kind run roughly 4.5–5.5 in total length as adults, and that range is a reasonable estimate here. The trade name’s "Blue" qualifier points to blue nuptial colouration in dominant, breeding males — consistent with the pattern seen across several Copadichromis species, in which territorial males intensify to blue or blue-black while females and non-breeding fish stay plain and silvery. Habitat
The population is documented from Lupingu, on the Tanzanian shore of Lake Malawi. Like other Copadichromis, it is expected to occupy the open water just off the reef rather than sheltering within rock, shoaling and feeding above sand and rock in the productive inshore zone typical utaka favour. Water conditions follow the lake-wide standard: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Its range beyond Lupingu, and its relationship to the several other Copadichromis forms documented from the same stretch of coast, are not established for this specific population.
Feeding
As a utaka, this population is expected to be a specialist zooplanktivore, hovering in open water and picking individual copepods and other small planktonic animals from the water column with a fast, protrusible mouth. This feeding mode, built around numerous fine gill rakers and keen eyesight for spotting drifting prey, is the defining ecological trait shared across Copadichromis. The shoaling habit that goes with it is itself an anti-predator and foraging strategy: a moving school of utaka confuses predators while spreading the work of locating patches of dense plankton across many pairs of eyes. No feeding study specific to this population has been published.
Mating
Utaka mating follows a lek-like pattern with no pair bond. Mature males are expected to establish spawning sites near the reef and display there in nuptial blue colour to draw passing females, who move through the area in loose schools outside of breeding and select a mate at his site. Displaying males typically hold ground within sight of several rivals, forming a loose aggregation of competing territories rather than a single isolated site — the classic lek arrangement, in which females do the choosing and males compete mainly through colour intensity and persistence rather than direct combat. No courtship observations specific to the Lupingu population have been published; this account follows the pattern documented across the genus.
Breeding
Copadichromis sp. "Lupingu Blue" is expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive strategy shared by the entire genus. A spawning female takes her eggs into her mouth immediately and is drawn to the egg-spot markings on the displaying male’s anal fin, taking in the milt that fertilises the clutch already held in her buccal cavity. She then broods the eggs and fry alone for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming young, with no male role beyond spawning. Clutch size has not been documented for this population; utaka of this size typically carry a few dozen eggs per brood.
In the aquarium
Copadichromis sp. "Lupingu Blue" is an uncommon locality utaka in the trade. Keepers taking it on should follow the general template for an open-water Malawi utaka: a tank of at least 59 in, with a large open span of fine sand and only modest rock structure, suits this shoaling, midwater fish far better than dense rockwork. Water chemistry should match Lake Malawi — warm, hard, and strongly alkaline — with regular partial water changes to keep nitrate low. A single male with several females is the standard low-stress stocking ratio. Diet should be varied, built around a quality flake or pellet supplemented with frozen zooplankton-type foods such as brine shrimp, mysis, and daphnia, and tankmates should be calm haps or peacocks rather than aggressive mbuna.
Conservation
Copadichromis sp. "Lupingu Blue" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and as an undescribed form it has no Red List status of any kind — a statement about its taxonomic situation, not about the safety of its wild population. As an inshore utaka from the Tanzanian shore, it faces the general pressures affecting Lake Malawi’s open-water cichlid fauna: artisanal net fishing, which targets utaka broadly as a food fish, alongside ornamental collection. It should be described as unassessed rather than assigned any inferred status.
