Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Copadichromis sp. "Mbenji Blue" is not a formally described species. It carries no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The placeholder name follows the standard convention for undescribed Lake Malawi cichlids: the genus Copadichromis, the qualifier "sp." marking undescribed status, and a trade name combining a colour descriptor, "Blue," for breeding male coloration, with the locality "Mbenji," the island where the form is best known. It is recognised through field and aquarium literature, chiefly the work of Ad Konings, and sits within the broad, still-unsettled complex of small to medium schooling Copadichromis found across the lake's open-water reefs. Until it receives a formal description, no authority or date should be attached to it.

Morphology

This is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed haplochromine on the standard Copadichromis plan, built for sustained schooling swimming rather than manoeuvring among rocks. Genus-typical size for the smaller utaka species runs roughly 4–5.5 in total length, though the precise adult size of this specific form has not been independently documented. As the trade name indicates, breeding males develop a deep blue body colour, the feature that gives the form half its name; the exact extent and pattern of that blue, and the coloration of females and non-breeding males, have not been documented in fine detail in the sources available to this account. Males are expected to carry egg-spot markings on the anal fin when reproductively active, as in other Copadichromis, while females and subordinate males are typically plainer and more silvery.

Habitat

Copadichromis sp. "Mbenji Blue" is documented from Fuawe Island and Mbenji Island, two closely spaced islands in west-central Lake Malawi. Water conditions follow the Lake Malawi norm: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Its precise depth range and full distribution beyond the two documented islands have not been established.

Feeding

Like other Copadichromis, this form is expected to be a zooplankton feeder, foraging in the open water column above reefs and sandy bottoms. Utaka use a protrusible jaw and fine gill-raker apparatus to pick individual zooplankton — copepods and other small crustaceans — out of the water, typically while schooling in loose to dense aggregations over productive reef areas. No feeding study specific to this population has been published; this account follows the well-documented genus pattern.

Mating

Copadichromis sp. "Mbenji Blue" is expected to follow the polygynous, lek-like mating system typical of schooling Copadichromis, with no pair bond. Breeding males leave the school to hold small display territories, or "stations," on rock or sand at favoured breeding reefs, where they display their blue breeding colour to attract females passing overhead. Females select among displaying males and descend to spawn at a chosen station before returning to the school. No courtship study specific to this population has been published; this account is inferred from the well-documented mating system shared across Copadichromis.

Breeding

Like all Copadichromis, this form is a maternal mouthbrooder. After spawning at a male's station, the female takes the eggs into her mouth; contact with the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin, as she attempts to gather what appear to be further eggs, triggers fertilisation of the clutch already held in her buccal cavity. She then broods the eggs and larvae for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during that period, before releasing free-swimming fry that rejoin the open-water community. There is no paternal or biparental care beyond this. Clutch size has not been documented for this specific form.

In the aquarium

Copadichromis sp. "Mbenji Blue" appears in the trade as a schooling utaka valued for the blue coloration of breeding males, best kept in a group rather than singly to reflect its natural social behaviour.

A long tank with generous open swimming space suits this fish better than the densely rockworked layout favoured for mbuna, though rock or driftwood cover should still be included for retreat and for territorial males to display near. A footprint of at least 59 in is a sensible minimum for a group. Water should follow the Lake Malawi standard: warm, hard, and alkaline, with regular partial water changes to control nitrate. Diet should include a quality cichlid pellet or flake as staple, supplemented with small frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops; fatty foods should be limited, as they predispose Malawi cichlids to bloat. A numerically female-biased group, as with other utaka, reduces harassment pressure on individual females from actively breeding males.

Conservation

Copadichromis sp. "Mbenji Blue" has not been evaluated by the IUCN. As an undescribed form without a published scientific name, it has no Red List status of any kind — a statement about its taxonomic situation, not about its wild population safety. As a form restricted to a small area around Mbenji and Fuawe islands, it is exposed to the general pressures on Lake Malawi's cichlid fauna, including the utaka fishery that targets schooling Copadichromis across the lake and localised habitat disturbance. Tightly localised endemics of this kind are, in general, more vulnerable to local disturbance than wide-ranging species simply because their entire known population occupies a small area, though no assessment specific to this form exists. It should be described as unassessed rather than assigned any inferred status.
