Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Copadichromis sp. "Chizumuluensis Londo" is an undescribed utaka documented from Londo Bay, on the Mozambique shore of Lake Malawi, close to Chizumulu Island. Its trade name links it to Copadichromis chizumuluensis, a species described in 2006 from that island — itself a fish that circulated in the hobby for years under the informal tag "Copadichromis sp. chizumulu blue" before it was formally named. Whether this Londo Bay population is that same species, found a short distance from its type locality, or a distinct but similar-looking relative, is not established.

Taxonomy & naming

Copadichromis sp. "Chizumuluensis Londo" is not itself a formally described taxon. Its trade name borrows the species epithet of Copadichromis chizumuluensis, described by Stauffer and Konings in 2006 from Chizumulu Island, a small island in the northern part of Lake Malawi, and adds "Londo" for the collecting site, Londo Bay on the nearby Mozambique shore. The two localities lie close together geographically, which is presumably why the epithet travelled with this population, but no formal work has established whether the Londo Bay fish is Copadichromis chizumuluensis proper, a distinct population of it, or a separate, similar-looking species. There is a real precedent for that uncertainty resolving in either direction: the nominal species itself was known in the hobby for years only by an informal trade tag before Stauffer and Konings’s 2006 description settled its status, and it would not be unusual for a nearby population to follow the same path, or to turn out to be something else. Copadichromis as a whole was erected by Eccles and Trewavas in 1989 for the lake’s open-water, zooplankton-feeding utaka.

Morphology

This form is expected to share the fusiform, silvery build typical of the open-water utaka. Size has not been measured for this population specifically; nominal Copadichromis chizumuluensis reaches about 4 in standard length in type material, with males reported growing larger than females, to roughly 6.5 in total length according to field sources. Colour, if this population matches the nominal species, would follow that pattern: breeding males dark-bodied with a blue breast, a narrow yellow marginal band, and pale spots in the anal fin, against females that stay a plain silvery grey. Whether the Londo Bay fish shows this exact pattern has not been independently confirmed in the sources available for this account.

Habitat

The population is documented from Londo Bay, on the Mozambique shore of Lake Malawi, close to Chizumulu Island. Nominal Copadichromis chizumuluensis is known from a very restricted area of only a few square kilometres around its island type locality, breeding at the interface of sand and rock at depths of roughly 39–66 ft; if the Londo Bay population shares that ecology, it would occupy a similarly narrow, similarly shallow reef habitat rather than deep or open water. Water conditions follow the lake-wide standard: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Its precise range and its relationship to the Chizumulu Island population are not established for this specific form.

Feeding

As a utaka, this population is expected to be a specialist zooplanktivore, picking small planktonic animals from the water column near the reef with the fast, protrusible mouth typical of the genus. Nominal Copadichromis chizumuluensis is also recorded taking benthic invertebrates alongside zooplankton, suggesting a somewhat broader diet than the purest open-water utaka rather than an exclusively midwater feeding strategy — consistent with a fish tied closely to a small, reef-bound range rather than ranging widely offshore. That broader diet may itself be an adaptation to the narrow habitat documented for the nominal species, where a fish confined to a few square kilometres of reef benefits from being able to exploit food sources beyond the open-water plankton alone. No feeding study specific to the Londo Bay population has been published.

Mating

Mating in nominal Copadichromis chizumuluensis follows the utaka pattern of male bower-building at the interface of sand and rock, with dominant males defending a spawning site and displaying to draw females rather than forming any pair bond. Males are reported holding territories directly against the reef edge, where the transition from solid rock to open sand gives a natural boundary for a defensible site; a colouring male displays there with fin and body movements typical of Malawi haplochromines, while subordinate males and non-breeding fish stay away from active territories. This population is expected to follow the same pattern by analogy, though no courtship observations specific to the Londo Bay fish have been published.

Breeding

Copadichromis sp. "Chizumuluensis Londo" is expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as is the entire genus. A female takes her eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning at the male’s bower and is drawn to the egg-spot markings on his anal fin, taking in the milt that fertilises the clutch already held in her buccal cavity. She then broods the eggs and fry alone before releasing free-swimming young, with the male’s role ending at the spawning site. Clutch size has not been formally published for the nominal species or for this population; a small, modest brood of a few dozen eggs is expected by comparison with similarly sized utaka.

In the aquarium

Copadichromis sp. "Chizumuluensis Londo" is a rare fish in the trade, most likely encountered as a wild import sold under its collecting locality. Keepers should treat it as a reef-associated utaka rather than a pure open-water shoaler: a tank of at least 47–59 in with a sand substrate and a defined rock structure at the sand-rock interface, rather than either bare sand or wall-to-wall rock, better matches the habitat documented for the nominal species. Water should be warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, matching the Lake Malawi standard, with regular partial water changes. A single male with several females is the sensible stocking ratio. Diet should be varied — a quality pellet or flake plus frozen zooplankton and small invertebrate foods — and tankmates should be calm rather than boisterous, since this is not a large or particularly aggressive fish. Given the unresolved identity behind the name, keepers should keep locality records rather than assume interchangeability with fish sold simply as Copadichromis chizumuluensis.

Conservation

Copadichromis sp. "Chizumuluensis Londo" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and as an undescribed or unconfirmed form it has no Red List status. The nominal species it is compared to, Copadichromis chizumuluensis, is assessed as Least Concern, but that assessment covers a genuinely tiny documented range around Chizumulu Island — a reminder that this genus includes several narrow-range endemics for which "Least Concern" reflects an absence of known threats within a small area rather than broad abundance. Whether the Londo Bay population shares that narrow-range pattern, and whether it is even the same species, is unresolved. It faces, at minimum, the general pressures on Lake Malawi’s inshore reef cichlids: ornamental collection and localized habitat disturbance. The honest summary is that it is unassessed.
