Taxonomy & naming
Cynotilapia sp. "Lion" has no formal scientific name, describing author, or Catalog of Fishes entry. The genus Cynotilapia takes its name from Greek kyon, "dog," referencing the genus's distinctive canine-like outer teeth, which set it apart from the bicuspid dentition typical of most other mbuna. The trade name "Lion" most plausibly derives from Lion's Cove, a well-documented Malawian collection point that appears among this form's recorded localities, though the precise naming history has not been published in detail and this reading should be treated as the most likely explanation rather than a confirmed fact. It should not be confused with the many other described and undescribed Cynotilapia species and colour forms recorded around the lake, several of which carry similarly informal trade names of their own.
Morphology
Cynotilapia species are generally smaller and more slender than the chunkier mbuna genera such as Tropheops and Petrotilapia, an adaptation consistent with their more open-water, plankton-feeding habits. The genus's diagnostic feature is dentition rather than body shape: an outer row of unicuspid, canine-like teeth, in contrast to the bicuspid or multicuspid teeth typical of algae-grazing mbuna. No independently published, detailed colour description specific to this "Lion" trade form is available for this account; sexual dichromatism broadly typical of the genus — blue, often barred males and duller, sometimes yellowish females — is expected but not specifically documented here.
Habitat
This form is recorded from a small set of localities spanning the Tanzanian shore — Cape Kaiser, Lupingu, Manda, and Ngwasi — and the Malawian shore at Mara Rocks and Sanga, plus Lion's Cove itself. As with other Cynotilapia it is associated with rocky habitat but forages well off the substrate in midwater rather than grazing directly on rock, aggregating loosely over reefs and drop-offs where plankton concentrates. Water conditions follow the lake's standard chemistry: warm, hard, and alkaline, with temperature in the mid-20s Celsius and pH on the alkaline side of neutral.
Feeding
Cynotilapia sp. "Lion" is a planktivore, an atypical foraging mode among rock-associated mbuna. Rather than scraping algae directly from rock the way Tropheops or Petrotilapia do, it forms loose aggregations in midwater over rocky habitat and picks zooplankton from the water column, a niche that reduces direct dietary competition with the algae-grazing mbuna it shares habitat with. Zooplankton density in the water column varies through the day, and like other open-water feeders this fish is expected to track those changes, foraging most actively when prey is concentrated near the surface or against a drop-off. Feeding in midwater rather than on the substrate reduces direct competition with the algae-grazing mbuna that dominate the same rocky habitat, letting the two feeding guilds coexist on the same reef.
Mating
No dedicated behavioural study of this specific form exists, but Cynotilapia as a genus follows the standard mbuna pattern of male territoriality: dominant males hold small territories on or near rock and display breeding colouration to attract passing females, with no pair bond and no male involvement beyond courtship and fertilisation. As in other maternal mouthbrooders of the lake, the male's anal fin carries egg-spot markings -- round, egg-like blotches of colour -- that play a role in courtship: a female collecting her own eggs after spawning is drawn to peck at these spots as though they were additional eggs, and in doing so takes in the sperm needed to fertilise the clutch she already holds. This egg-spot mechanism is one of the more thoroughly documented features of haplochromine courtship across Lake Malawi and is assumed, by strong genus-level precedent, to operate in this form as well.
Breeding
Reproduction follows the standard Lake Malawi haplochromine pattern of maternal mouthbrooding: the female collects fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning and broods them for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental care. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; given the genus's generally smaller body size, a modest clutch of a few dozen eggs is a reasonable expectation. After release, free-swimming fry of Lake Malawi cichlids typically seek out shallow, structurally complex refuge -- crevices among rocks or, for sand-associated species, cover near the shoreline -- where they are less exposed to predators than in open water, sometimes continuing to shelter near the mother for a short period even though she provides no further direct care once they are released.
In the aquarium
Cynotilapia sp. "Lion" suits a mbuna community tank with a rock backdrop and open swimming space in front of it, reflecting its midwater, plankton-feeding habits rather than a purely rock-grazing lifestyle. A footprint of at least 47 in with a fine sand base and broken rock sightlines suits a group.
Water should replicate Lake Malawi conditions: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, and moderately hard to hard water, held stable. Diet should include a meaningful zooplankton-analogue component — daphnia, brine shrimp, and similar small foods — alongside a quality flake or pellet, since this genus is less exclusively vegetable-dependent than the algae-grazing mbuna. Keeping a reasonable group size, rather than a single pair, allows its natural loose-schooling foraging behaviour to show.
Conservation
Cynotilapia sp. "Lion" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, has no Red List assessment of any kind. Its recorded range spans a handful of localities on both the Tanzanian and Malawian shores, but like other locality-restricted mbuna it likely occurs only at specific reefs within that broader range rather than continuously, and individual sites remain vulnerable to concentrated collection pressure. No formal conservation status should be attached to it pending taxonomic description.
