Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Cynotilapia sp. "Maleri" is an undescribed dwarf mbuna known only from a small cluster of islands and reefs in the southern half of Lake Malawi — the Maleri Islands, Nakantenga Island, and the adjoining Mkondiwa Reef. It was among the earliest Cynotilapia populations noted by science, appearing in Ribbink and colleagues' 1983 rocky-shore survey of the lake, yet more than four decades later it still carries no formal name. In the field it is a dark, almost inky-blue mbuna barred with black vertical stripes, one of dozens of local Cynotilapia colour forms that fragment across Lake Malawi's rocky coastline, each isolated on its own island or reef and each subtly different from its neighbours.

Taxonomy & naming

Cynotilapia sp. "Maleri" has never been formally described. It carries no scientific authority, no publication date, and no entry under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes; the name in use is an informal trade and field designation, following the standard convention for undescribed Lake Malawi cichlids — genus, the abbreviation "sp.", and a quoted locality name, here taken from the Maleri Islands, its only well-documented home. The genus Cynotilapia (Regan, 1922) is a compact group of small mbuna defined by unicuspid, dog-like teeth — unusual among mbuna, most of which carry bicuspid or tricuspid teeth suited to scraping mats of filamentous algae. That dental difference lets Cynotilapia species pick loose diatoms and algae from rock and sand rather than graze tightly bound turf, and it underpins a genus that has radiated into an unusually large number of narrow-range colour forms, most still undescribed. This particular form is documented in Ad Konings' Cichlids Yearbook series, where it is recorded from the Maleri Islands and treated as a distinct entity from the superficially similar C. sp. "Chinyankwazi" and C. sp. "Ndumbi" forms found elsewhere in the southern lake. Its closest formally described relative is presumed to lie within the broad C. afra species complex, but no genetic or morphological study has resolved its exact placement.

Morphology

Konings describes Cynotilapia sp. "Maleri" as a dark blue mbuna crossed by black vertical bars, a pattern shared, in broad strokes, with several other Cynotilapia forms from the southern lake but distinguished by its particular shade and bar spacing at the type locality. Beyond that documented colour pattern, detailed morphometrics have not been published for this form specifically. Like other members of the genus it should show the diagnostic Cynotilapia dentition — a single row of unicuspid, canine-like teeth in each jaw — and the compact, moderately elongate body typical of small mbuna. Genus-typical size for Cynotilapia runs to roughly 3–3.5 in total length, with males somewhat larger than females; no validated maximum length has been published for the Maleri form itself. Sexual dichromatism is expected on the pattern seen throughout the genus: males carry the fuller expression of the blue-and-black barred pattern along with brighter fin edging when in breeding condition, while females and non-dominant males are paler and less contrastingly marked.

Habitat

The form is known from a small cluster of localities in the southern part of Lake Malawi: the Maleri Islands themselves, the nearby Mkondiwa Reef, and Nakantenga Island, all lying in open water south of the Nankumba Peninsula. This is classic mbuna habitat — rocky shoreline and submerged boulder fields interspersed with patches of sand — at the shallow-to-moderate depths where Cynotilapia typically forages, generally within the top 49–66 ft. The southern lake basin here is warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, consistent with Lake Malawi's rocky littoral zone throughout. Because the documented range is limited to this one island group and its immediate reefs, the form's total habitat footprint is small even by the standards of Lake Malawi's famously localised mbuna radiations.

Feeding

Cynotilapia's defining feature, the unicuspid "dog-tooth" dentition that gives the genus its name, sets its feeding apart from most other mbuna. Where zebra-type mbuna use closely packed bicuspid or tricuspid teeth to scrape and shear tightly bound algal turf directly off rock, Cynotilapia species pick loose diatoms, filamentous algae, and fine organic detritus from both rock and sand surfaces, often foraging over open, sediment-dusted rock rather than defending a dense algal mat. Cynotilapia sp. "Maleri" is presumed to follow this genus-wide pattern, picking rather than scraping its food, and — again typical of the genus — juveniles and non-territorial fish often forage in loose, mixed-species aggregations picking suspended particles and loose algae from the water column over rubble, only becoming strictly territorial grazers once males mature and take up a breeding rock.

Mating

Breeding behaviour has not been documented specifically for the Maleri form, but the genus follows the standard mbuna pattern seen throughout Lake Malawi's rocky shore. Mature males establish and defend small territories on the reef, often no more than a patch of rock or a shaded crevice, and display to passing females in full breeding colour rather than building any nest or bower. Cynotilapia territories tend to be smaller and less fiercely contested than those of larger mbuna such as Maylandia or Petrotilapia, consistent with the genus's generally lower level of intraspecific aggression. Courtship follows the typical haplochromine sequence: a receptive female is drawn to a displaying male, circles his territory, and spawns with him over the substrate rather than in a constructed pit.

Breeding

As in every Lake Malawi haplochromine, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding. The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning and carries them, without feeding normally, until the fry are large enough to be released as free-swimming young; the male provides no further care. Clutch sizes in small Cynotilapia species are modest, typically a few dozen eggs, and the brooding period runs roughly three to four weeks, in line with the genus generally. None of these specifics have been confirmed by direct field study of the Maleri population itself, so the figures given here should be read as genus-typical expectations rather than documented measurements for this exact form.

In the aquarium

Cynotilapia sp. "Maleri" is an uncommon fish in the trade, reaching hobbyists only sporadically given the narrow, offshore range from which it is collected. Where it is kept, it should be treated as a standard small mbuna: a tank with abundant rockwork built into caves and sightline breaks, a sand substrate, and water chemistry matching Lake Malawi's rocky zone — hard, strongly alkaline (pH roughly 7.7–8.6) and warm (75–82 °F). A footprint of at least 39.5–47 in suits a group, since Cynotilapia is generally best kept as one male with several females to spread male aggression, which — while less severe than in many mbuna — is still present. Diet should lean vegetable: a good-quality spirulina-based flake or pellet, supplemented sparingly with small live or frozen invertebrates, mirroring the genus's natural mix of algae and picked micro-invertebrates. Fatty, protein-heavy foods should be avoided, as with all Malawi mbuna, because of the elevated risk of digestive disease known in the hobby as "Malawi bloat."

Conservation

Cynotilapia sp. "Maleri" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form with no formal scientific name, has no Red List status of any category — that is a statement of absence, not of safety. The documented range is limited to the Maleri Islands, Nakantenga Island, and Mkondiwa Reef, a small area within the southern lake. Species and forms confined to a handful of islands and reefs are inherently more exposed to localised pressures — over-collection for the aquarium trade, habitat disturbance, or chance environmental events — than lake-wide species, even where, as here, no specific threat has been documented. The honest position is that the form is unassessed and narrow-ranging, and that narrow range alone is reason for caution in how heavily any one locality is collected.
