Taxonomy & naming
Cynotilapia aurifrons was described by Patrick Tawil in 2011, in a paper that re-examined the type material of Cynotilapia afra and of Microchromis zebroides in order to sort out decades of confusion in the genus. That confusion runs deep: for years, the great majority of fish traded and written about as 'Cynotilapia afra' were, on close inspection, either the separate species now called Cynotilapia zebroides or additional undescribed forms, leaving true C. afra restricted to a much smaller range than the trade name implied. Tawil's 2011 revision split out C. aurifrons as a distinct species on the strength of its type material, formally recognising a form that field workers had already noted as distinct in northern Lake Malawi. The genus Cynotilapia itself was erected by C. Tate Regan in 1922 for Malawi mbuna bearing widely spaced, fang-like unicuspid outer teeth rather than the bicuspid rows typical of other mbuna — from the Greek kyon (dog) and tilapia, the catch-all term for African cichlids. The species epithet aurifrons combines the Latin aurum (gold) and frons (forehead), naming the golden patch on the crown that distinguishes breeding males of this species from the blue- or white-capped males of related Cynotilapia forms.
Morphology
Cynotilapia aurifrons is a small, slender mbuna built on the same plan as its close relative C. afra: a moderately elongated, laterally compressed body with an evenly aligned jaw and, distinctively for the genus, widely spaced, unicuspid, slightly recurved outer teeth rather than the dense comb of bicuspid teeth typical of most mbuna. Adult size in Cynotilapia generally runs small, with territorial males reaching roughly 3–4 in and females somewhat smaller. Sexual dichromatism is strongly pronounced, as in all Cynotilapia. The name-giving feature is the male's golden forehead patch, set against a body colour typically in the blue-to-black range with vertical barring characteristic of the genus; females and non-territorial males are plainer, silvery to brownish-grey, lacking the golden crown.
Habitat
This species is documented along a stretch of Lake Malawi's west-central shore running roughly from Lundu in the south up through Kawanga, Chilumba, Mphanga Rocks, Luwino Reef, Matambukira Rocks, Chewere, Mdowa, Lushununu and Kakusa — broadly the Chilumba to Nkhata Bay coastline in the lake's northern-central reaches. Like all Cynotilapia it is a rocky-shore specialist, occupying rock and rock-sand transition habitat rather than open sand or deep water, though its plankton-feeding habit draws it away from the rock face into the water column more than most mbuna. The water here is Lake Malawi's typical hard, alkaline medium — warm and well-buffered — consistent with conditions recorded across the genus's range.
Feeding
Cynotilapia aurifrons feeds in the manner that defines its genus: as a planktivore working the open water just off the rocks, using its widely spaced, dog-like teeth to pick suspended food items — phytoplankton, diatoms and zooplankton — one at a time from the current, rather than scraping algae from stone the way most mbuna do. Non-territorial fish and females forage loosely in open water away from the rock face, while territorial males, tied to the cave they defend, are thought to supplement this diet by grazing aufwuchs within reach of their site when planktonic food is scarce — the same dual feeding strategy documented in C. afra. This matters directly for captive care, since a diet built around meaty foods runs against this species' natural plankton-and-algae feeding ecology.
Mating
As in other Cynotilapia and mbuna generally, males establish and defend small cave territories among the rocks, from which they display to passing females and drive off rival males. Mating is polygynous: a dominant male typically spawns with several females over his tenure rather than forming a lasting pair. A ripe female enters the male's territory and the pair engages in the conventional haplochromine courtship sequence, culminating in spawning inside or near the male's cave. Because Cynotilapia forms — including the closely related afra and zebroides complex — differ mainly in male colour and interbreed readily where ranges overlap or in mixed aquaria, keepers are cautioned never to house different Cynotilapia forms together.
Breeding
Cynotilapia aurifrons is a maternal mouthbrooder. Following spawning, the female takes the fertilised clutch into her mouth, drawn in part by the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin, which prompt her to mouth at them and take in sperm that fertilises the eggs she is already carrying. She broods the developing eggs and larvae alone for roughly three weeks, largely without feeding, before releasing free-swimming fry near cover. There is no male or biparental care. Clutch size is expected to be modest, in keeping with the small size typical of Cynotilapia — likely a dozen to a few dozen eggs, though this has not been separately documented for the species.
In the aquarium
Cynotilapia aurifrons is an uncommon offering in the hobby relative to the widely traded Cynotilapia zebroides forms, but where available it suits an intermediate mbuna keeper. A long aquarium of at least 47 in with abundant stacked rockwork — offering caves and broken sightlines rather than open floor — is the appropriate setup, since bare tanks concentrate aggression in territorial mbuna. Water chemistry should mirror the lake: hard and strongly alkaline, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, temperature in the mid-20s Celsius. Diet should be planktivore-appropriate — a spirulina-based staple supplemented with small live or frozen zooplankton such as daphnia or brine shrimp — rather than the protein-heavy regimens that predispose Malawi cichlids to bloat. A single male kept with several females is the standard low-conflict social structure, and this species should never be mixed with other Cynotilapia forms, since the whole genus hybridises readily and mixing blurs the identity of distinct wild populations — precisely the confusion Tawil's 2011 revision worked to untangle.
Conservation
Cynotilapia aurifrons has not been separately assessed by the IUCN Red List, so no formal conservation status is available. As a relatively recently split species restricted to a defined stretch of Lake Malawi's west-central shore, it faces the pressures common to narrow-range rocky-shore mbuna: localised ornamental collection, shoreline habitat disturbance, and sedimentation from catchment runoff that can degrade the rocky biotopes these fish depend on. Because it was only formally distinguished from the wider afra-zebroides complex in 2011, population-level data specific to this species are limited, and its status should be considered unevaluated rather than assumed safe or at risk.
