Labidochromis sp. "Zebra Eastern" has never been formally described: it has no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The name follows the standard convention for undescribed Lake Malawi cichlids — genus, "sp.", and a descriptive tag in quotation marks — with "Zebra" referring to a barred colour pattern and "Eastern" distinguishing it from other, differently qualified "Zebra"-type Labidochromis forms recorded elsewhere in the lake. Labidochromis is a genus of roughly three dozen described species plus numerous undescribed trade forms, most of them separated in practice by fine differences in colour and locality rather than by published anatomical diagnoses. Until a taxonomic revision examines voucher material from Gome, this form should be treated as its own distinct population rather than assumed synonymous with any other named Labidochromis.
Morphology
As the trade name implies, this form shows vertical barring along the flanks, a pattern found in only a minority of Labidochromis — most species in the genus are more uniformly coloured, from the plain yellow of L. caeruleus to the pale silvers and blues of various rock-dwelling forms. Beyond that implied pattern, no formal colour description or measurement has been published for this specific population, and this account does not go further than what the name itself documents. Body shape is presumed genus-typical: an elongated, moderately compressed mbuna body with the specialised, closely packed outer teeth that define Labidochromis, used for grazing aufwuchs or picking invertebrates from rock depending on species.
Habitat
The only recorded locality for Labidochromis sp. "Zebra Eastern" is Gome, on the Malawian shore of the lake. Labidochromis as a genus is predominantly rock-dwelling, occupying crevices and boulder fields across a range of depths from the shallow surge zone down past twenty metres depending on species, and this form is presumed to follow that general pattern absent any published depth-specific data. Water conditions at Gome follow Lake Malawi's typical inshore rocky-habitat profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, in the range generally reported for the lake's shallower rocky reefs.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study exists for this form. Labidochromis species divide broadly between algae-grazing aufwuchs feeders, which rasp the mixed mat of diatoms and micro-invertebrates off submerged rock, and crevice-picking invertivores that work fine gaps between boulders for small crustaceans and insect larvae; several species do both opportunistically. Absent a specific account, this form is presented as a genus-typical rock-associated feeder without further precision on which mode predominates.
Mating
No study of courtship or territorial behaviour has been published for Labidochromis sp. "Zebra Eastern". Rock-dwelling Labidochromis in general follow the wider Lake Malawi cichlid pattern: males hold small territories among rocks or crevices with no lasting pair bond, and receptive females visit territories to select a mate. Whether this form's males display from open rock or from within a cave or crevice, and the specific sequence of courtship, have not been documented and should not be assumed beyond that general genus pattern.
Breeding
Like every Lake Malawi cichlid, this form is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder: a female takes fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning and incubates them there for several weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental role from the male. No clutch size, brood duration, or other reproductive detail specific to this population has been published; genus-typical Labidochromis broods run to a few dozen eggs, offered here as a general expectation rather than a documented figure for this form.
In the aquarium
Labidochromis sp. "Zebra Eastern" is not a mainstream aquarium fish; hobbyists are far more likely to encounter the widely traded Labidochromis caeruleus than a locality-specific undescribed form like this one. A keeper who obtained it should provide the standard Lake Malawi rocky-reef setup: substantial rockwork with caves and crevices, a fine sand substrate, and hard, alkaline water in the range of roughly 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6. Given the genus's mixed feeding strategies, offering both plant-based and small meaty foods is a sensible default. No husbandry record specific to this form exists; general Labidochromis and mbuna practice is offered here only as a reasonable starting point.
Conservation
Labidochromis sp. "Zebra Eastern" has no IUCN Red List assessment, since formal evaluation requires a validly published scientific name and none exists for this form. As a rock-associated cichlid apparently known from a single locality, it would share the general exposures documented across Lake Malawi's rocky-habitat endemics — localised pressure from shoreline development, sedimentation, and ornamental collecting that specifically targets narrow-range Labidochromis forms — but no population-specific data exist to characterise its status beyond "unassessed".
