Taxonomy & naming
Melanochromis sp. "Parallelus Mbweca" carries no describing author, no type specimen, and no listing in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. "Parallelus" is a Latin-derived trade descriptor meaning parallel, here used for a striping pattern of horizontal lines running side by side along the flank, rather than as a reference to any formally described species bearing that epithet; this account does not assert a link to a particular described Melanochromis, since no such link is confirmed. "Mbweca" marks the collection point, Mbweca Rocks on the Mozambique shore, distinguishing this population from any other "parallelus"-type Melanochromis recorded elsewhere in the lake under the same descriptive tag.
Morphology
Melanochromis is a genus of small to medium, elongate mbuna typically marked with horizontal dark stripes, and several species undergo a striking colour reversal in breeding males, in which the dark stripes lighten and the body darkens. The "parallelus" tag on this population implies a pattern of multiple parallel horizontal stripes as its principal distinguishing trait, but no published colour description, size record or morphometric account exists for the Mbweca population specifically, and this account does not go beyond what the trade name itself implies.
Habitat
This form is documented from Mbweca Rocks on the Mozambique shore of Lake Malawi. As with other Melanochromis, it is expected to be a rock-dwelling species, associated with boulder and crevice habitat in the hard, alkaline water typical of the entire lake.
Feeding
No feeding study specific to this population has been published. Melanochromis as a genus includes both aufwuchs grazers and more opportunistic feeders that take drifting particles and small invertebrates from the water column; without a dedicated study, this account does not assign a single feeding mode to the Mbweca population.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been documented for this population specifically. Melanochromis generally are territorial, polygynous mbuna with no pair bond; males hold and defend caves or crevices in the rock, displaying to attract ripe females that visit briefly to spawn.
Breeding
As in all Lake Malawi haplochromines, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth after spawning and broods them alone before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental care from either parent. Clutch size and brooding duration have not been documented for this population.
In the aquarium
This form is not established in the general aquarium trade under this name, and no dedicated husbandry record exists for it. Were it kept, care would follow the standard Melanochromis template: hard, alkaline water in the mid-20s Celsius, strong filtration, and a rockscape with abundant caves to break up sightlines, given the genus's well-documented territorial temperament. As with other Melanochromis, hybridisation with related species should be avoided.
Conservation
Melanochromis sp. "Parallelus Mbweca" has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, and as an undescribed form it is not currently eligible for formal assessment. Its documented range is a single reef, and no dedicated survey of collecting pressure or habitat condition there has been published, so its status is best described as unevaluated and effectively unknown.
