Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

"Melanonotus Deep" or Mylochromis sp. "Incola Mumbo," no specific described relative has been proposed for it in the sources available here. The northern lake, particularly its Tanzanian shoreline, holds a number of Mylochromis populations that remain informally documented; this is one of them. No authority or publication date should ever be attached to it.

Morphology

No published measurements or colour description specific to this population are available. It can be placed provisionally within the genus's general body plan: an elongate, laterally compressed sand-associated haplochromine, typically bearing an oblique dark stripe or series of blotches along the flank in non-breeding dress — the pattern that runs across most of the genus and gives several Mylochromis species their common descriptor "lateristriga" types. Size for a mid-sized member of the genus typically falls in the 6–8 in range, though this figure is a genus-typical estimate rather than a measurement taken from Ikombe fish. Sexual dimorphism is expected on genus-typical grounds — breeding males developing stronger colour and contrast than the drab, cryptically marked females — but the specific colours have not been documented for this form, and none are invented here.

Habitat

The only recorded locality for this form is Ikombe, on the Tanzanian shore near the northern end of Lake Malawi. This stretch of shoreline sits close to where the Great Ruaha and other minor rivers feed into the lake's northern basin, and the coastline there mixes rocky points with sand and rubble bays, the intermediate habitat where many Mylochromis species forage. The northern lake in general is deeper and less thoroughly surveyed by aquarium collectors than the popular central-lake islands, and species distributions in this stretch are consequently less well documented across the board.

Feeding

This form is presumed to be a benthic invertivore in the manner typical of the genus, foraging over sand and rubble for small invertebrates and detrital material. Some Mylochromis species specialise further toward molluscivory (crushing snails with molariform pharyngeal teeth) or piscivory (ambushing small fish with an elongate body and extendable jaw), but without a confirmed species identity or dietary study for the Ikombe population, the conservative statement is the genus-typical generalist invertivore diet rather than a specific specialisation.

Mating

No courtship or territoriality study exists for this form. Lake Malawi haplochromines are uniformly polygynous with no pair bond, and Mylochromis species typically hold loosely defended sand or rubble territories where a male displays to passing females. Spawning would occur over a cleared patch of sand or rubble, with the female taking the fertilised eggs into her mouth and carrying them through several weeks of development before releasing free-swimming fry, without further parental input from the male. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; a few dozen eggs is a reasonable estimate by analogy with similarly sized congeners rather than a measured figure.

In the aquarium

This form has essentially no established presence in the aquarium hobby and no dedicated husbandry record. A keeper who obtained it would be following genus-typical Mylochromis practice: a tank of at least 47–59 in, a sand or fine mixed sand-and-rubble substrate, and water matched to Lake Malawi's chemistry — roughly 75–82 °F, pH 7.7 to 8.6, moderately hard to hard. As with most northern-lake Mylochromis populations offered only occasionally by specialist importers, provenance should be recorded carefully and stock from this locality should not be mixed with visually similar forms from elsewhere in the lake.

Conservation

No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Mylochromis sp. "Ikombe", and none can until it is formally described. Its status in the wild is unknown; the northern Tanzanian shore faces the same general pressures affecting Lake Malawi's inshore fish communities elsewhere — small-scale fishing and shoreline development — but no population-specific data exist for this form. The honest position is simply that it is unassessed.
