Taxonomy & naming
Mylochromis sp. "Three Peaks" has no scientific description, no describing author or year, and does not appear in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes or FishBase. Its trade name carries only the locality where it was collected — Three Peaks Reef — without a resemblance qualifier tying it to a described Mylochromis species. That absence should be read as an open question rather than evidence the form is taxonomically isolated; many Mylochromis populations circulate in the trade under locality-only names simply because no published comparison to a named species has been made. No authority or publication date should be attached to it.
Morphology
No published measurements or colour description specific to this population are available. On genus-typical grounds it can be placed as an elongate, laterally compressed sand-associated haplochromine, likely carrying the oblique dark stripe or blotch pattern common across many Mylochromis species in non-breeding dress. A mid-sized figure of roughly 6–8 in TL is a reasonable estimate by genus comparison rather than a measurement of Three Peaks Reef fish specifically. Sexual dimorphism is expected on genus-typical grounds, with breeding males more strongly coloured than drab, cryptic females, but specific colours have not been documented.
Habitat
The only recorded locality for this form is Three Peaks Reef, on Lake Malawi's central-western shore. Reefs of this kind typically combine rocky outcrops with adjacent open sand, providing the intermediate habitat that many Mylochromis species use to forage close to structure while feeding primarily on the softer substrate. Water at Three Peaks Reef follows the lake's typical warm, hard, alkaline profile, with the sand-associated foraging zone generally in the upper tens of metres of the water column.
Feeding
This form is presumed to be a benthic invertivore in the manner typical of the genus, foraging over sand adjacent to reef structure for small invertebrates and detrital material. Without a confirmed species identity or dedicated dietary study, the conservative statement is the genus-typical generalist invertivore diet rather than a claim of specialised molluscivory or piscivory.
Mating
No courtship or territoriality study exists for this form. Genus-typical expectations apply: a polygynous mating system with no pair bond, males holding loosely defended territories near reef structure and displaying to passing females, with a moderate level of male-male competition during breeding condition.
Breeding
Mylochromis sp. "Three Peaks" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the universal reproductive strategy of the Lake Malawi haplochromine flock. Spawning would take place over a cleared patch of sand near the male's territory, with the female taking the fertilised eggs into her mouth and brooding them for several weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further male or biparental care. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; a few dozen eggs is a reasonable estimate by analogy with similarly sized congeners.
In the aquarium
This form has little to no established presence in the aquarium hobby and no dedicated husbandry record. A keeper who obtains it should follow genus-typical Mylochromis practice: a tank of at least 47–59 in, a sand substrate with some rockwork to break sightlines, and water matched to Lake Malawi's chemistry — roughly 75–82 °F, pH 7.7 to 8.6, moderately hard to hard. It is expected to be reasonably peaceable by Malawi standards and workable in a mixed hap and peacock community, though this has not been tested for the form specifically.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Mylochromis sp. "Three Peaks", and none can until it is formally described. Its status in the wild is unassessed; no population-specific data exist to characterise threats at Three Peaks Reef beyond the general pressures — small-scale fishing and aquarium collection — that affect Lake Malawi's inshore cichlid communities broadly.
