Taxonomy & naming
Petrotilapia kitrinos was formally described in 2026 by Sabo, Konings and Stauffer, with Mumbo Island in the southern part of Lake Malawi as the type locality (the holotype is recorded from 13°59.530′S, 34°45.397′E). The Catalog of Fishes lists it as a valid species — 'Petrotilapia kitrinos Sabo, Konings & Stauffer 2026' — placed in family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. Before its description the fish circulated for decades under the provisional name Petrotilapia sp. 'mumbo yellow,' one of the dozen or so undescribed Petrotilapia taxa that field workers such as Ribbink and colleagues (1983) and Konings flagged as awaiting formal treatment.
The genus Petrotilapia was erected by Trewavas in 1935 and diagnosed by its predominantly tricuspid oral teeth, set in broad, fleshy lips — the hallmark of the genus among the mbuna, the Chichewa name for Lake Malawi's rock-dwelling cichlids. The name combines Greek petra, 'rock,' with the cichlid genus Tilapia: a 'rock tilapia.' The specific epithet kitrinos is Greek for 'yellow,' a direct echo of the old 'mumbo yellow' label and a pointer to the yellow coloration that characterises the fish. As elsewhere in this genus — whose species overlap heavily in body shape and meristics and differ chiefly in the live color of breeding males — coloration is the practical key to recognising kitrinos. Because the description is very recent, much of the species-level data below draws on the long body of field and aquarium observation accumulated under the 'mumbo yellow' name.
Morphology
Petrotilapia kitrinos is a sizeable mbuna. In the lake, males are reported to reach roughly 6 in and females around 4.5 in, with aquarium fish sometimes growing a little larger — proportions typical of the genus, which contains the largest-bodied of the mbuna. Its defining external features are those of all Petrotilapia: broad, fleshy lips densely packed with long, slender, flexible tricuspid teeth in many rows, with a lateral series of unicuspid teeth behind the main band, forming a comb that remains visible even when the mouth is shut.
Coloration is the diagnostic feature and the source of the name. The fish is characterised by yellow tones — the basis for the 'mumbo yellow' field label — with the strongest, cleanest yellow expression in display fish, set against the blue-tinged head and fin highlights common in the genus. As in other Petrotilapia, color is tied to sex and social status, so territorial males, subordinate males, and females differ in intensity and pattern; the yellow ground is what separates kitrinos at a glance from the dull-blue Petrotilapia genalutea, the blue-black Petrotilapia nigra and Petrotilapia chrysos, and the bright-blue Petrotilapia microgalana that occur elsewhere in the lake. Detailed meristic counts follow the genus norm of seventeen to nineteen dorsal spines and three anal spines, with the formal ranges set out in the 2026 description.
Habitat
Petrotilapia kitrinos is endemic to Lake Malawi (also Niassa or Nyasa), the rift lake this site is really about, and within it to Mumbo Island, a small rocky island in the lake's southern reaches off Cape Maclear. Like the other narrow-range members of its genus, it occupies a limited stretch of rocky coast rather than a lake-wide distribution — Mumbo is the heart of its known range.
The fish is a rock-shore animal of the sediment-free rocky and intermediate (rock-meets-sand) zones, where the clean stone carries the algal film it grazes. Aquarium-trade and field accounts place it from the shallows down to about 82 ft, a fairly broad depth band for an mbuna, in the warm, hard, alkaline water characteristic of Malawi's rocky coasts — roughly 75–81 °F (75-81 °F), pH around 7.7-8.6, and high carbonate hardness. As with all the rocky-shore mbuna, that stable rift-lake chemistry and the structure of the rocks themselves define where the species can live, and its confinement to one island's shoreline is the central fact of its ecology.
Feeding
Petrotilapia kitrinos is an aufwuchs grazer — 'aufwuchs' being the German term mbuna keepers borrow for the felt of attached algae, diatoms, and small invertebrates that coats sunlit rock. Using the dense comb of slender tricuspid teeth that defines the genus, it brushes loose algal filaments and the tiny animals among them from the rock surface; German hobby literature describes it as limnivorous, feeding on the Aufwuchs of the rock formations together with the small organisms it contains. As in the rest of Petrotilapia, it is best understood as a grazing omnivore that works the rock film and supplements it with plankton when available rather than as a strict herbivore.
This grazing strategy — combing rather than hard scraping — is the functional signature of Petrotilapia and part of what lets several species share Malawi's rocky shores by partitioning depth and exposure. For a single-island endemic like kitrinos, the local rock-and-plankton resource of Mumbo's shoreline supports the whole population, which is why the cleanliness of that rock matters so much to the species.
Mating
Like the rest of the Malawi mbuna, Petrotilapia kitrinos is a polygynous, territorial breeder in which only a fraction of males hold breeding territories at any one time. A territorial male intensifies his yellow display dress, claims and defends a patch of rock, and courts passing females from it while driving off rival males; subordinate males and females live less tethered lives, drifting and shoaling over the rocks, and a ripe female moves to a holding male's territory to spawn.
No dedicated courtship study has yet been published under the kitrinos name, but the pattern is consistent across Petrotilapia and the mbuna generally, and the species is expected to follow it closely. The male's nuptial coloration and the female's choice of partner carry much of the burden of keeping the species reproductively distinct — the assortative, color-based mate choice that, throughout this genus, holds otherwise similar fish apart on shared or neighbouring shorelines.
Breeding
Petrotilapia kitrinos is a maternal mouthbrooder, like all Lake Malawi mbuna. The pair bond lasts only through spawning: the male displays over his territory, the female lays her eggs and immediately takes them into her mouth, fertilization follows in the usual mouthbrooder fashion, and she then incubates the clutch for roughly three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. There is no paternal or biparental care; the female alone broods and shelters the young.
Clutch sizes have not been documented under the kitrinos name, but they fall in the range expected of a large mbuna of this body size — on the order of a few dozen comparatively large, yolk-rich eggs, the low-fecundity, high-investment trade-off characteristic of mouthbrooders. After release the fry shelter among the rocks and begin grazing the algal film, and the female may briefly take them back into her mouth when threatened in the first days before the brood disperses. The species has been bred in aquaria under its 'mumbo yellow' name following exactly this mouthbrooding template, though formal published accounts specific to kitrinos remain to be written.
In the aquarium
Under its long-standing trade name 'mumbo yellow,' Petrotilapia kitrinos has a modest track record in the specialist mbuna hobby — more than most narrow-range Petrotilapia, thanks to its appealing yellow color, though it remains a fish for dedicated rift-lake keepers rather than a mainstream staple. With the 2026 description, that body of keeping experience now attaches to a formal name.
As a large mbuna, kitrinos wants a footprint-driven setup: a long tank with generous rockwork providing grazing surfaces, territories, and broken sightlines, in line with the 130-US-gallon-plus (≈130 US gal) tanks experienced keepers recommend for Petrotilapia. Match the wild chemistry — hard, alkaline water around pH 7.8-8.4 and warm tropical temperatures — and feed it as the herbivore-leaning omnivore it is. German hobby guidance specifically recommends a spirulina-rich, protein-limited diet and warns against over-feeding rich animal protein, the standard caution for this feeding guild because Petrotilapia digest soft protein foods such as bloodworms or adult brine shrimp poorly and are prone to bloat. Temperament follows the genus: surprisingly even for the fish's size, with aggression hottest male-to-male, so keep a group with enough females and space. As always with this hybridization-prone genus, keep a single Petrotilapia species per tank — especially important for a newly described, single-island endemic whose pure stock is worth protecting.
Conservation
Petrotilapia kitrinos has not yet been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, which is unsurprising for a species formally described only in 2026; under its former provisional name it had no standalone assessment either. Its conservation interest, however, is straightforward to state: it is a single-island endemic, restricted to the rocky shores of Mumbo Island, which places it among the narrowest-range fishes in an already localized genus. Narrow-range island endemics are inherently vulnerable, because any degradation of that one shoreline affects the entire known population.
The wider context is the documented and mounting stress on the lake itself. The basin-scale review by Chavula and colleagues (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research 49(6):102241) records heavy over-fishing, rising sediment and nutrient loading from deforested catchments, an estimated warming of roughly 33 °F in the shallow water column that strengthens stratification and reduces productivity, and the looming risk of invasive species across Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa. For a shallow rocky-shore grazer confined to one island, sedimentation is the most direct of these threats — silt smothers the algal film it combs and clouds the clear water its breeding displays depend on — and the confinement amplifies rather than dilutes the risk. Mumbo Island lies within the Lake Malawi National Park, which affords some protection, but a future formal assessment would reasonably weigh the species' tiny range against that safeguard. For now the honest statement is: not evaluated, but a narrow-range endemic worth watching.
