Taxonomy & naming
Tropheops sp. "Deep" is not a formally described species: no authority, no publication date, and no entry under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Its name marks it as a depth ecotype rather than a locality or colour form — "deep" is a label field workers and hobbyists apply, across Tropheops and several other Malawi mbuna genera, to populations recorded well below the typical shallow rocky habitat most of the genus occupies. Whether "Deep" represents the same lineage as shallow-water Tropheops at Lions Cove and Nkhata Bay, adapted to a different depth band, or a genuinely separate population, has not been resolved by any formal study, and this account makes no claim either way.
Morphology
This form carries the genus's core body plan — a short, deep, laterally compressed mbuna body with a steep forehead and downturned mouth suited to grazing algae from rock — but is expected to show the general adjustments documented in deep-water mbuna forms elsewhere in the lake: comparatively larger eyes suited to dimmer light, and typically more muted body coloration than shallow-water relatives of the same genus, since deep light conditions favour subdued pattern over vivid display colour. No published morphometric or colour description exists for this specific population, and this account should be read as a reasonable expectation based on the pattern documented in other deep Malawi mbuna forms rather than as confirmed fact for "Deep" itself. Size is presumed genus-typical, roughly 3.5–4.5 in TL.
Habitat
Lions Cove and Nkhata Bay sit on Lake Malawi's north-central western shore, a well-studied stretch of rocky coastline. "Deep" is documented from notably greater depth than the typical Tropheops zone, which the genus overview places mostly in the upper few metres of the water column; deep-water mbuna forms elsewhere in the lake are recorded down toward 98–131 ft, and this population is presumed to occupy a similar deeper band on the rock face. Water chemistry through this depth range remains the lake's standard hard, alkaline profile, with temperature running slightly cooler than in the shallow littoral. Deep rocky habitat of this kind receives markedly less light than the shallow littoral, and mbuna populations documented from comparable depths elsewhere in the lake often show reduced algal cover relative to shallow reefs, forcing more opportunistic or supplementary feeding strategies alongside straightforward grazing.
Feeding
Tropheops as a genus is an aufwuchs specialist, rasping the algal mat from rock at a steep, head-down angle. Algal productivity falls with depth as light diminishes, so a genuinely deep-water Tropheops population would be expected to graze a thinner, less productive mat than its shallow relatives, potentially supplementing with picked detritus or opportunistic plankton — a plausible but unconfirmed expectation, since no feeding study specific to this population exists. Feeding-bone studies across the genus (Conith et al. 2020, BMC Evolutionary Biology) show that jaw and pharyngeal shape shift measurably with the depth and angle a population feeds at, evidence that Tropheops as a whole sits under real selective pressure to specialise its grazing posture reef by reef. Aufwuchs itself is not pure algae: it is a mixed mat of diatoms, filamentous algae, cyanobacteria, and the small invertebrates living within it, so even a strict grazer takes in a meaningful amount of animal protein incidentally. Feeding territories in this genus double as spawning sites, which is why males defend them so persistently against both feeding competitors and rival suitors.
Mating
Breeding is presumed to follow the standard Tropheops pattern of territorial, polygynous males displaying to visiting females on the rock face, though no account specific to a deep-water population has been published. Reduced light at depth may affect how colour-based courtship functions in this form, but this is speculation, not documented behaviour. Because neighbouring Tropheops populations at different reefs often carry visually distinct male colours despite being difficult to separate by body shape alone, colour is thought to function as a mate-recognition cue that limits hybridisation between look-alike forms — a pattern documented across the mbuna radiation generally and one reason Malawi cichlid taxonomy leans so heavily on live colour photographs from the collection site. Male aggression toward rival Tropheops, including toward similarly coloured intruders of other genera, is a defining feature of life on a crowded reef, and much of a dominant male's energy budget goes into defending his patch of rock rather than foraging widely.
Breeding
Tropheops sp. "Deep" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Tropheops, with the female carrying fertilised eggs in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry and no further parental role for the male. Clutch size and brooding duration have not been documented for this form. Tropheops gracilior, the best-studied species in the genus, is documented brooding for about 25 days, a figure used across the genus as a working benchmark in the absence of species-specific data. The brooding female typically stops feeding almost entirely for most of this period, drawing on stored reserves, and will hold the clutch in her mouth even under stress before finally releasing free-swimming fry that are already capable of independent feeding. Tropheops in general breed readily once established in captivity, which is part of why locality-specific forms have proliferated in the hobby even without formal descriptions to back them.
In the aquarium
"Deep" reaches the hobby only rarely, since deeper-collected mbuna are harder to source than shallow reef fish. Where kept, the standard Tropheops template applies: dense rockwork with broken sightlines, a tank of at least 47 in, and a healthy female-to-male ratio to spread territorial aggression. Water should be warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Diet should remain predominantly vegetable-based — spirulina flake or pellet with occasional blanched greens — to avoid the digestive illness aquarists call Malawi bloat, which high-protein feeding readily triggers in grazing mbuna. Because deep-collected mbuna generally reach the trade in smaller numbers and less regularly than shallow reef fish, keepers seeking this specific form should expect sporadic availability through specialist Malawi importers rather than routine stock at general aquarium retailers.
Conservation
Tropheops sp. "Deep" has no IUCN Red List assessment, since it has never been formally described and has no valid scientific name to assess — a statement about taxonomy, not population health. As a mbuna tied to a specific stretch of rocky coastline, and one collected from depths that make survey work harder, it is exposed to the general pressures on Lake Malawi's ornamental cichlids, but no dedicated population data exists for this form. More broadly, Lake Malawi itself is under sustained strain: sediment and nutrient runoff from deforested catchments smothers exactly the clean, sunlit rock that aufwuchs-grazing mbuna like Tropheops depend on, and warming surface water is strengthening thermal stratification in ways that reduce the nutrient upwelling supporting the lake's productivity generally. None of this is documented as a specific threat to this particular form, but it is the backdrop against which every rock-restricted, single-lake mbuna population should be read.
