Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras ortegai was described in 2007 by Marcelo Britto, Flávio Lima and Max Hidalgo in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology, from the lower río Putumayo drainage of Peru; the type material came from the río Yaguas, a Putumayo tributary in the Department of Loreto. The species is named for Hernán Ortega Torres, curator of the fish collection at the Museo de Historia Natural in Lima, for his work on Peru's freshwater fishes. In the hobby it is the 'Loreto panda,' a name that nods to its region and its superficial resemblance to the panda cory.
That resemblance is misleading: ortegai is really one of the striped, 'loxozonus-type' corys — the band-and-mask fishes — rather than a true panda. It is told from C. panda by having more lateral body plates, no dorsal-fin blotch, a scatter of melanophores around the middle of the cleithrum, a caudal fin marked with rows of small blotches confined to the rays, a more slender body and a narrower area between the cleithra. With the 2024 revision of the Corydoradinae by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues — which split the old super-genus Corydoras — this species is placed in the resurrected genus Hoplisoma, so the current valid combination is Hoplisoma ortegai. We keep the hobby heading and note the new combination here, following the Catalog of Fishes for the name.
Morphology
This is a small, fairly slender cory reaching about 2 in in total length. It has the usual genus build — armour of two rows of overlapping bony plates rather than scales, a blunt helmeted head, three pairs of barbels around a downturned mouth, and stiff leading spines in the dorsal and pectoral fins — but a notably trim, narrow-bodied profile compared with the chunkier panda.
The colour pattern is its signature. The ground is pale, crossed by a dark mask through the eye, and a bold dark longitudinal stripe runs the length of the flank and continues onto the caudal fin — the loxozonus-type band that places it among the striped corys rather than the spotted pandas. The caudal carries rows of small dark blotches restricted to the fin rays, and there is no dark blotch in the dorsal fin (a useful separator from the true panda). The overall effect is a crisp, high-contrast little fish, which is much of its appeal in the trade.
Habitat
Corydoras ortegai is known from the lower río Putumayo drainage in the Department of Loreto, northern Peru, with the type series taken in the río Yaguas, a Putumayo tributary. This is lowland western-Amazon habitat near the Peru–Colombia border.
The describing authors found it mostly in lotic (flowing) habitats: muddy-brown-coloured streams with soft bottoms of clay and sand. These are warm, soft, slightly acidic Amazonian waters. Published chemistry for the exact sites is limited, so aquarium guidance leans on the general envelope for lowland striped corys: warm temperatures, soft to moderately soft water and a near-neutral to slightly acidic pH. As a small lowland cory it lives among the marginal shallows and stream beds, foraging over and within the soft substrate.
Feeding
Corydoras ortegai is a benthic omnivore and detritivore like the rest of the genus. It works the bottom, sifting sand and litter with its barbels for small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, microcrustaceans and organic detritus. There is no specialised diet on record; in the aquarium it takes sinking dried foods readily and relishes small live and frozen items such as bloodworm and brine shrimp. As always with corys, it should be fed a varied sinking diet in its own right and not left to scavenge tankmates' scraps.
Mating
Corydoras ortegai courts and spawns in the manner shared across the genus. These are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond: a receptive female cleans a spawning surface, the group becomes active, and a male takes up the classic 'T-position' at right angles to her head. A few eggs at a time are fertilised and held in a basket formed by the female's pelvic fins, carried to the cleaned site and pressed into place, the sequence repeating until the eggs are spread across several surfaces. No behaviour unique to this species has been documented; the account follows its close relatives.
Breeding
The Loreto panda has been bred in the aquarium and reproduces much like other small striped corys. Spawning is usually prompted by conditioning on rich live and frozen foods followed by a cooler, larger water change to mimic the rainy season. The adhesive eggs are laid in small batches on firm surfaces — plants, stones, glass — and receive no parental care; the adults will eat them, so breeders remove either the eggs or the parents. Eggs hatch in a few days, and the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods once the yolk sac is absorbed. It is regarded as a moderately straightforward cory to breed, neither the easiest nor especially demanding.
In the aquarium
Corydoras ortegai is a well-established and popular aquarium cory, valued for its small size and clean striped pattern. It wants the standard, non-negotiable cory care. Keep it in a shoal of six or more — it is a social fish, stressed and subdued when kept singly or in pairs — over soft sand that will not erode the barbels it feeds with; coarse or sharp gravel blunts and infects them, one of the commonest signs of poor husbandry.
Water should be warm but not hot (roughly 72–79 °F), clean, well-filtered and well-oxygenated with gentle flow, and soft and near-neutral to slightly acidic; like most lowland corys it accepts a fairly broad pH and hardness range. It is entirely peaceful and an excellent community fish among small tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids and other calm tankmates, never anything large enough to bully it. The usual cautions hold: the fin spines can catch in a net, so a cup is safer, and a stressed cory can release a skin toxin that, in the small volume of a transport bag, can kill the whole group — so transport them gently and in small numbers.
Conservation
Corydoras ortegai is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern (assessed 2014). It occupies lowland streams of the lower Putumayo in a sparsely populated, comparatively well-preserved corner of the western Amazon, and faces no identified species-specific threat at present. As a fish of a particular drainage rather than a continent-spanning generalist, it is more exposed than the most widespread corys to any localized degradation — deforestation, pollution or changes in the Putumayo system — but nothing currently places it in danger, and it is supported in the trade partly by captive breeding.
