Maylandia (the "zebra mbuna", with the competing genus name Metriaclima used by some authors) is one of the largest and least fully catalogued cichlid radiations in Lake Malawi, and cave- or crevice-associated forms of this kind are recognised informally at a number of sites without having been given full taxonomic treatment.

Habitat
This form is recorded from Manda and Pombo Rocks, both on the Tanzanian shore of Lake Malawi, part of the stretch of rocky coast along Tanzania's portion of the lake. Its trade name indicates a preference for cave and crevice microhabitat within the broader rocky reef environment, rather than the open boulder faces favoured by many other Maylandia. Water conditions follow Lake Malawi's typical rocky-habitat envelope: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, at the moderate depths where caves and overhangs are common along a boulder-strewn shore.
Feeding
Maylandia is, genus-wide, an aufwuchs grazer, rasping algae and associated micro-organisms from rock surfaces with specialised bicuspid teeth. A cave- or crevice-associated form may forage more within sheltered spaces and shaded rock than a strict open-face grazer, but no feeding study specific to this population has been published, so its diet is presented here as genus-typical aufwuchs grazing rather than independently documented.
Mating

A keeper who obtained it should aim to reproduce its apparent cave-associated habitat within a standard Maylandia setup: substantial rockwork arranged to create genuine caves and overhangs rather than a flat open wall, fine sand substrate, and hard, alkaline water in the range of roughly 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6. Diet should lean heavily plant-based — spirulina flake, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables — with meaty foods limited to occasional supplements, since chronic high-protein feeding predisposes mbuna to bloat. A single male with several females is the standard, lowest-stress social arrangement.
