Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Maylandia is, genus-wide, an aufwuchs grazer, rasping algae and associated micro-organisms from rock surfaces with specialised bicuspid teeth. A cave- or crevice-associated form may forage more within sheltered spaces and shaded rock than a strict open-face grazer, but no feeding study specific to this population has been published, so its diet is presented here as genus-typical aufwuchs grazing rather than independently documented.

Mating

Diet should lean heavily plant-based — spirulina flake, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables — with meaty foods limited to occasional supplements, since chronic high-protein feeding predisposes mbuna to bloat. A single male with several females is the standard, lowest-stress social arrangement.

Maylandia sp. "Cave Manda" has no IUCN Red List assessment, since formal evaluation requires a validly published scientific name and none exists for this form.
