Taxonomy & naming
Maylandia sp. "Elongatus Goldbar" has no describing author, no publication date, and no listing under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The genus Maylandia, honouring the German aquarium author Hans J. Mayland, was erected for the group of mbuna long known informally as the "zebra" complex — some of the most intensively studied cichlids in Lake Malawi for their extraordinarily fine-grained, site-specific colour radiation, in which populations separated by only a few kilometres of coastline can carry visibly distinct male colour patterns. Within that complex, "elongatus" is a long-used informal tag for a loose group of slender, vertically barred forms historically associated with the name Pseudotropheus elongatus, now understood to represent many geographically distinct, largely undescribed populations rather than one single species. The "Goldbar" qualifier is a trade-name addition distinguishing this Chizumulu–Likoma population from other elongatus-type forms recorded elsewhere in the lake, on the basis of its gold-toned barring. No formal taxonomic study has assigned this population a species boundary, and it should be treated as one of many locally distinct elongatus-group forms pending that work.
Morphology
Consistent with the elongatus group generally, this form has a notably slender, elongate body compared to the deeper-bodied zebra-type Maylandia species, an adaptation associated with life in narrow rock crevices rather than open rock faces. Its trade name indicates a gold or yellow bar or stripe as a distinguishing feature of male breeding colour, set against the dark vertical barring typical of elongatus-group males; the precise arrangement and intensity of that gold marking has not been documented in a formal description, so it should be read as the identifying feature implied by the name rather than a confirmed, described pattern. Genus-typical size for Maylandia mbuna runs to roughly 3.5–4.5 in total length, with males somewhat larger than females. As in the wider genus, sexual dichromatism is expected to be pronounced, with males carrying the fuller expression of barring and gold accent colour and females duller and less contrastingly marked.
Habitat
The form is recorded from reefs and rocky shoreline around Chizumulu and Likoma Islands, in the open water of central Lake Malawi — Chiwi Rocks and Chizumulu Island itself, plus Likoma Island. This island group sits well offshore, isolated by deep water from the mainland coast, and its rocky habitat supports one of the lake's richest concentrations of locally endemic mbuna forms. Elongatus-group Maylandia typically occupy narrow crevices and the interstitial spaces between boulders, in the shallow-to-moderate rocky zone generally within the top 33–49 ft, rather than the open rock faces used by deeper-bodied zebra-type species. The surrounding water is warm, hard, and alkaline, as throughout Lake Malawi's rocky littoral.
Feeding
Like other Maylandia, this form is an algae grazer, using rows of fine, closely set teeth — typically bicuspid in juveniles, shifting toward unicuspid with age in many zebra-type mbuna — to scrape and shear filamentous algae and the associated aufwuchs community of diatoms and micro-invertebrates from rock surfaces. Mature individuals typically defend a feeding territory against both conspecifics and other algae-grazing mbuna, since productive rock surfaces are a limited and contested resource on a crowded reef. The elongatus group's notably slender body and habit of foraging within narrow crevices may let it exploit algal growth in tight spaces inaccessible to bulkier, deeper-bodied mbuna, a resource-partitioning pattern documented across the wider elongatus complex at other localities. No feeding study specific to this Chizumulu–Likoma population has been published, so this account reflects the general pattern for the group rather than a direct observation of this form.
Mating
As in the wider Maylandia/zebra complex, mature males are expected to hold and defend a small territory on the rock face — often a crevice entrance in the case of elongatus-group forms — displaying to passing females in full breeding colour. Courtship follows the standard haplochromine "egg-spot" pattern seen throughout Lake Malawi's mouthbrooding cichlids, in which the male's anal fin carries egg-like markings that the female pecks at during spawning, triggering fertilisation as she collects the real eggs into her mouth. No locality-specific behavioural study exists for this population, so this description reflects genus-typical courtship rather than a direct field account.
Breeding
Reproduction follows the standard Lake Malawi haplochromine pattern: maternal mouthbrooding, in which the female alone carries the fertilised eggs and subsequent fry in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks, without normal feeding, until the fry are developed enough for independent release. During this period brooding females typically withdraw from open rock faces and shelter in crevices or quieter stretches of the reef, reducing both their own feeding activity and their exposure to predators and territorial disputes. The male provides no further care after spawning and plays no role in guarding the eggs, fry, or brooding female. Clutch sizes in Maylandia mbuna are typically modest, on the order of a few dozen eggs, broadly consistent with other small mbuna species; specific figures for this Chizumulu–Likoma population have not been documented in a published study.
In the aquarium
Maylandia sp. "Elongatus Goldbar" would be kept as a standard elongatus-type mbuna: a tank with dense rockwork arranged into narrow crevices and overhangs, since this slender-bodied group naturally exploits tight spaces that bulkier mbuna cannot use, along with a sand substrate. Water should replicate Lake Malawi's rocky zone — hard and strongly alkaline, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, temperature 75–82 °F. As with most mbuna, males can be aggressive toward conspecifics and similarly patterned tankmates, so a group with one male and multiple females, or careful stocking within a larger mixed-mbuna community with adequate rockwork to break sightlines, is advisable. Diet should be predominantly vegetable — spirulina-based flake or pellet — supplemented sparingly with small invertebrates, and fatty protein-heavy foods should be avoided given the well-documented risk of digestive bloat in Malawi mbuna.
Conservation
Maylandia sp. "Elongatus Goldbar" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, has no Red List status. Its documented range is limited to the Chizumulu–Likoma island group in central Lake Malawi. The elongatus complex as a whole is emblematic of the extreme, fine-grained endemism found throughout the lake's mbuna radiation, where dozens of visually distinct, reproductively isolated populations occupy separate stretches of rocky shoreline; that pattern makes any single elongatus-group population inherently vulnerable to concentrated over-collection or localised habitat disturbance, even where, as here, no specific threat has been documented.
