Taxonomy & naming
Maylandia sp. "Elongatus Linganjala" is undescribed: there is no published diagnosis, holotype, authority or year attached to it, and none should be invented. Maylandia was erected by Meyer, Riehl & Zetzsche in 1984 to hold the "zebra" mbuna and their relatives, a genus later placed by some authors in synonymy with the competing name Metriaclima before being restored as valid in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes; species- and population-level names within the group remain unsettled for exactly this reason. "Elongatus" is not a single lineage but a body-shape grade recognised informally across several genera of Lake Malawi mbuna, so populations called "elongatus" from different reefs are not necessarily close relatives. This form is known specifically from Linganjala Reef and should be treated as its own locality population pending any formal taxonomic review.
Morphology
The defining trait is body shape: a notably more slender, elongated build than the classic barrel-bodied "zebra" mbuna, which lets the fish exploit narrower rock crevices than stockier relatives can use. Field and hobby reports place adults at a modest size for the genus, in the same broad range as other elongatus-type populations, with males the larger sex. Elongatus-type Maylandia males typically show a blue base colour with dark vertical barring; females are usually plainer blue-grey, though some elongatus populations elsewhere in the lake include orange-blotched individuals. No formal morphometric data or a documented colour description exist specifically for the Linganjala population, so this account does not assign it a fixed pattern beyond the genus- and group-typical build.
Habitat
This form is documented from Linganjala Reef on the Malawian shore of Lake Malawi. As with other elongatus-type mbuna, it is expected to favour rocky habitat rich in crevices and overhangs rather than open rock faces, using narrow gaps for shelter from predators and from bulkier, more aggressive mbuna sharing the same reef. Water at the site follows the lake's standard chemistry: warm, hard and alkaline, roughly 24-28 degC and pH 7.7-8.6, at the shallow-to-moderate depths typical of rocky mbuna habitat.
Feeding
No feeding study specific to this population has been published. Like other elongatus-type mbuna it is presumed to graze aufwuchs, the algae, diatom and micro-invertebrate film coating sunlit rock, using the fine, closely packed dentition typical of the genus. Its slender build likely lets it reach into crevices less accessible to deeper-bodied grazers on the same reef, a niche advantage documented in other elongatus-type populations.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been documented for this population specifically. Elongatus-type mbuna generally follow the standard lek-like Maylandia system: males hold and defend a small territory centred on a rock crevice, displaying from its entrance to attract passing females rather than ranging widely, with spawning taking place within or near that shelter.
Breeding
As in all Malawi mbuna, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth after spawning, using the genus-wide egg-spot mechanism on the male's anal fin to trigger fertilisation, and broods them alone for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. Clutch size for this specific population has not been documented; small elongatus-type mbuna typically produce clutches of a few dozen eggs.
In the aquarium
This form is not established in the aquarium trade under this name, and no dedicated husbandry record exists for it. Were it kept, care would follow the standard elongatus-type template: rockwork dominated by narrow gaps and tunnels rather than open piles, a tank of at least 47 in to let multiple males hold separate territories, and water matching the lake's hard, alkaline chemistry (pH 7.7-8.6, 24-28 degC). A vegetable-forward, spirulina-based diet is appropriate, with high-protein foods minimised given the genus's susceptibility to Malawi bloat.
Conservation
Maylandia sp. "Elongatus Linganjala" has never been assessed by the IUCN, and as an undescribed form without a validly published name it is not currently eligible for formal assessment. Its known range is a single reef, and no dedicated survey of collecting pressure or habitat condition there has been published, so its status is best described as unevaluated and effectively unknown rather than assigned any category.
