Taxonomy & naming
Maylandia sp. "Elongatus Ngkuyo" is undescribed: there is no published diagnosis, holotype, authority or year attached to it, and none should ever be invented. Maylandia was split from the old, broadly defined Pseudotropheus by Meyer and Förster in 1984 to hold the "zebra" mbuna and their relatives, a genus later placed in synonymy with Metriaclima by some authors before Maylandia was restored as the valid name following subsequent taxonomic review; species-level names in the group remain contested for exactly this reason. "Elongatus" refers to a body-shape grade recognised informally across several genera of Lake Malawi mbuna — a narrower, more torpedo-shaped fish than the type "zebra" form — rather than to a single lineage, so populations called "elongatus" from different parts of the lake are not necessarily close relatives of one another. This form is known specifically from the Ngkuyo Island area and nearby Tanzanian reefs, and should be treated as its own locality population pending any formal review.
Morphology
The defining feature is the body plan: distinctly more slender and elongated than the classic barrel-bodied "zebra" mbuna, an adaptation that lets the fish squeeze into narrow rock crevices for shelter. Adults are modestly sized for the genus, with hobby and field reports suggesting a maximum around 3.5–4 in, males slightly larger than females. Coloration in elongatus-type mbuna is typically a blue base with dark vertical barring in males, sometimes with a touch of yellow or orange in the fins depending on population; females are usually a plainer blue-grey or, in some elongatus populations, an orange-blotched (OB) morph. No formal morphometric or meristic data exist for this specific form, so precise counts and measurements should not be cited as established.
Habitat
This form occupies rocky habitat along the Tanzanian shore of Lake Malawi, recorded from Higga Reef, Hongi Island, Ngkuyo Island, Puulu and Undu Reef — a tight cluster of sites in the lake’s north-eastern waters, an area less intensively surveyed historically than the Malawian shore and correspondingly rich in undescribed locality forms. Like other elongatus-type mbuna it favours zones with abundant crevices and overhangs rather than open rock faces, using the narrow gaps for shelter from predators and from more aggressive, deeper-bodied mbuna. Water at these rocky sites is the lake’s typical warm, hard, alkaline medium — roughly 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6 — at the shallow-to-moderate depths, broadly 7–49 ft, that rocky mbuna habitat generally occupies.
Feeding
Maylandia sp. "Elongatus Ngkuyo" is an aufwuchs grazer, feeding on the mat of algae, diatoms and associated micro-invertebrates that coats sunlit rock surfaces — the standard mbuna diet. Its comparatively fine, closely packed dentition is suited to combing this turf from rock, including from within the narrow crevices the fish favours for shelter, a niche less accessible to bulkier rock-scraping mbuna. As with other algae grazers in the lake, the true nutritional target is as much the diatoms, bacteria and small invertebrates embedded in the algal mat as the algae itself. No dedicated dietary study exists for this population; the above reflects the well-documented feeding ecology of elongatus-type mbuna generally.
Mating
The social system follows the standard mbuna pattern: polygynous and lek-like, with no pair bond. Males hold and defend a small territory centred on a rock crevice or cave, displaying from its entrance to attract passing females rather than ranging widely. Because elongatus-type fish rely on tight crevices for their territories, spawning sites tend to be more sheltered and enclosed than the open rock faces used by some deeper-bodied mbuna. A receptive female enters or approaches the male’s territory, and courtship proceeds with the quivering and circling typical of haplochromine cichlids before spawning takes place, usually within or near the shelter of the crevice itself.
Breeding
As in all Malawi mbuna, Maylandia sp. "Elongatus Ngkuyo" is a maternal mouthbrooder. The female lays a small clutch within or near the male’s crevice territory and immediately takes the eggs into her mouth; fertilisation follows the well-documented egg-spot mechanism, in which the female mouths at the conspicuous spots on the male’s anal fin and draws in milt that fertilises the clutch already held in her buccal cavity. She then broods the eggs and larvae for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during this period, before releasing free-swimming fry that receive no further parental care. Clutch sizes in small elongatus-type mbuna are typically modest — a few dozen eggs — though no figure has been documented specifically for this form.
In the aquarium
Maylandia sp. "Elongatus Ngkuyo" needs the standard Lake Malawi mbuna setup, with particular attention to crevices given its body shape. Rockwork should dominate the tank, built with plenty of narrow gaps, overhangs and tunnels rather than simple open piles, since this fish’s elongated build is an adaptation specifically for exploiting such spaces; a footprint of at least 47 in lets multiple males hold separate territories without constant conflict. Substrate can be sand or fine gravel.
Water should replicate the lake: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and hard, alkaline chemistry maintained consistently, since Malawi mbuna are intolerant of soft or acidic water over the long term. Like other mbuna it is aggressive and territorial, best kept in a group with a surplus of females per male and mixed with other robust mbuna of comparable temperament rather than gentler community fish. Diet should be predominantly vegetable — a spirulina-based flake or pellet as the staple, with occasional small live or frozen invertebrates — and high-fat, high-protein foods should be minimised, since they are strongly implicated in Malawi bloat.
Conservation
Maylandia sp. "Elongatus Ngkuyo" has never been assessed by the IUCN, and as an undescribed form without a validly published name it cannot be — the Red List process requires a recognised taxon. No conservation status, category or year should be attributed to it. The Tanzanian sector of Lake Malawi, where this form lives, has historically drawn less collecting and survey attention than the Malawian shore, so both its precise range and any pressures on it — ornamental collection, habitat disturbance, or fishing bycatch — remain poorly documented. The only honest statement available is that this is an unevaluated, informally named population whose true status is unknown.
