Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Mylochromis sp. "Lateristriga Nkhata" is not a formally described species. It has no scientific name of its own, no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, because no taxonomist has published a description establishing it. It is an informal taxon recognised in the aquarium and field literature, principally through Ad Konings's work on the Cichlid Room Companion and in his Malawi field guides. The placeholder name follows the standard convention for undescribed cichlids: the genus Mylochromis, the abbreviation "sp." (species), and a descriptive tag in quotation marks combining a colour/pattern reference with a locality — "Lateristriga," for a mid-lateral dark stripe like that of the described species Mylochromis lateristriga, and "Nkhata," for the Nkhata Bay area where the population occurs. Mylochromis is a large, taxonomically difficult genus of some two dozen described species, several of them very similar in general form and separable mainly by dentition, colour pattern, and fin proportions — exactly the kind of group in which local populations circulate for years as undescribed forms before, if ever, receiving a formal name. Until a revision addresses this population directly it should be treated strictly as a Konings-recognised undescribed form, and no authority or date should be attached to it.

Morphology

Mylochromis is built on an elongate, moderately compressed haplochromine plan with a pointed head and a terminal, often slightly protrusible mouth — the shape of a cichlid that forages by picking prey items from open sand and crevices rather than grazing rock. Species in the genus range from roughly 12 to over 8 in depending on the species; without a formal description for this Nkhata Bay population, size and proportions are known only from field and hobby reports, which place it in the genus-typical mid-size range. The name "Lateristriga" identifies the diagnostic mark: a dark stripe running along the mid-flank, set against a paler, often silvery-blue ground colour in breeding males, with the fins carrying additional colour that varies between Mylochromis populations. Females and non-dominant males are markedly plainer, silvery with faint or absent striping, the typical pattern of concealment for haplochromine females that must remain inconspicuous while mouthbrooding. Beyond the stripe and general elongate body form, no further diagnostic detail specific to the Nkhata Bay population has been documented.

Habitat

This form is recorded from the Nkhata Bay area on the western shore of Lake Malawi and from Tchinga Reef, a short distance along the same stretch of coast. Both sites sit within the intermediate habitat much of the genus favours: a zone where rocky outcrops give way to open sand, rather than continuous reef or featureless sand flat. Mylochromis species typically patrol this transition, using rock cover while foraging out over the adjoining sand. Lake Malawi's water at these depths is warm, hard, and strongly alkaline — broadly mid-20s Celsius, pH on the alkaline side of neutral, moderate to hard general hardness — and the genus as a whole is found from a few metres down to considerably deeper water depending on the species. As an undescribed, locality-based form, the full extent of its range beyond the Nkhata Bay–Tchinga Reef stretch of coast is not established.

Feeding

Diet has not been documented specifically for this population, but the genus gives a reasonable guide. Mylochromis is ecologically diverse for a single genus: some species are specialised piscivores that ambush smaller fish, others include hard-shelled molluscs in the diet and carry molariform pharyngeal teeth suited to crushing them, and still others are generalist invertivores picking insect larvae and small crustaceans from sand and crevices. Without a description or dedicated stomach-content study for the Nkhata Bay form, it is safest to describe it as a benthic invertivore/micro-predator in the general Mylochromis mould, foraging over sand and among rocks at the intermediate-habitat interface, rather than assign it a more specific feeding role.

Mating

Like other Lake Malawi haplochromines, Mylochromis sp. "Lateristriga Nkhata" is presumed polygynous, with males defending small territories — typically a cleared patch of sand or a shelter site near rock cover — from which they display in nuptial colour to passing females. There is no pair bond and no shared parental duty. Females move between territories and select a male largely on the basis of his colour and site quality, then spawn briefly at his territory before departing with the fertilised clutch in her mouth. No behavioural study specific to this undescribed population exists; the account here follows the general pattern documented for the genus and for Lake Malawi haplochromines more broadly.

Breeding

Mylochromis sp. "Lateristriga Nkhata" is a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared by essentially all Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlids. After spawning at the male's territory, the female collects the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there for roughly three to four weeks, taking little or no food during this period, before releasing free-swimming, fully formed fry. There is no male or biparental care after spawning. Clutch size has not been documented for this form specifically; by analogy with similarly sized Mylochromis species it is likely a modest clutch on the order of a few dozen eggs. Aquarium spawning of the genus, where it has been kept, follows this same pattern without special difficulty once a compatible group is established.

In the aquarium

Mylochromis sp. "Lateristriga Nkhata" is an uncommon locality form rather than a mainstream aquarium staple, and availability in the trade is sporadic and tied to specific importers of Nkhata Bay/Tchinga Reef material. Where it is kept, husbandry follows the general template for a sand/intermediate-habitat Lake Malawi haplochromine of moderate size.

A tank of at least 47–59 in in length suits an adult group, with a fine sand substrate for natural foraging behaviour and a rockwork arrangement that leaves substantial open sand rather than filling the tank with cover — this genus is a sand forager, not a rock-dweller, and needs room to move and pick over open substrate. Water should replicate Lake Malawi's chemistry: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7–8.6, and moderately hard to hard water; prolonged soft or acidic conditions cause chronic health problems in Malawi cichlids. As with most Mylochromis, a single male with several females is the sensible social arrangement given the polygynous mating system and the risk of a lone male harassing an unreceptive partner in cramped quarters. A varied diet of quality pellet or flake food supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates suits the genus's general invertivore/micro-predator biology; very fatty foods should be avoided, as with other Malawi cichlids prone to bloat. Because this is a locality-specific, undescribed form, keepers who want to preserve its provenance should avoid crossing it with other Mylochromis populations or with the nominate Mylochromis lateristriga.

Conservation

Mylochromis sp. "Lateristriga Nkhata" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and because it is an undescribed form without a formal scientific name it has no Red List assessment of any kind — no status, no category, no published criteria. That silence reflects taxonomy, not safety. As a locality-restricted population on Lake Malawi's western shore it is exposed to the general pressures affecting the lake's nearshore cichlid communities: ornamental and food-fish collection, sedimentation from shoreline land use, and localised habitat disturbance around a populated area like Nkhata Bay. No conservation status should be fabricated for it. The honest statement is that it is unassessed, and that its true range, abundance, and any threats specific to it remain to be established by formal study.
