Taxonomy & naming
Mylochromis sp. 'lateristriga makanjila' carries no describing author, no type specimen, and no listing in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes; the name used here is a hobby convenience built from the described species it most resembles. Mylochromis lateristriga, the species the trade name invokes, takes its epithet from the Latin latus (side) and striga (a furrow or stripe), a reference to a lengthwise flank stripe. This undescribed form is understood, on the basis of that resemblance, to belong to the same species group, with 'Makanjila' distinguishing this particular set of collection points — a reef cluster in the far southeast of the lake — from other lateristriga-type populations recorded much farther north, toward the Tanzanian shore, under the same broad trade name.
Morphology
Mylochromis is a genus of moderately large, elongated, non-mbuna haplochromines that live over sand and the sand-rock transition rather than clinging to open rock; several species carry molariform, crushing pharyngeal teeth, reflected in the genus name itself (Greek myle, mill or molar). A lengthwise dark stripe along the flank, implied by the lateristriga name, is the principal colour marker distinguishing this form from other Mylochromis at the same reefs; a fuller published description of its colour pattern, fin shape or size does not exist, and this account does not invent one. Precise measurements — standard length, body depth, fin ray counts — have not been published for this form, and none are estimated here beyond the genus-typical range. As in most Lake Malawi haplochromines, males are expected to be the larger, more strongly coloured sex at maturity.
Habitat
Documented localities span an unusually wide stretch of Lake Malawi's shoreline: Chiofu, Gome and Masinje near Makanjila in the far southeast of Malawi's waters, Chiwindi on the Mozambique shore farther north, and Lundu and Undu Reef close to the Tanzanian border at the lake's northern end, along with Hai Reef recorded without precise coordinates. That spread suggests either a genuinely wide-ranging species or, more likely, a set of related but geographically separate populations sharing the same descriptive trade name. As with other Mylochromis, it is expected to favour sand and sand-rock transition habitat rather than pure open rock. Sand and sand-rock transition habitat in Lake Malawi grades gradually with depth, from shallow, current-swept shoreline to calmer, more stable conditions below the wave-mixed zone. Water chemistry is essentially uniform throughout the lake's oxygenated upper layer — hard and strongly alkaline — so differences between sites are mostly about substrate, rock cover and depth rather than water quality.
Feeding
No feeding study specific to this form has been published. Mylochromis as a genus is feeding-diverse: some species use their molariform pharyngeal teeth to crush snails and other hard-shelled invertebrates, others pick softer invertebrates from sand or algae-covered rock, and a few are known to trail brooding females to steal eggs or fry. Without a species-specific study, no single mode can be confidently assigned to this form, and this account does not guess. Non-mbuna Malawi haplochromines in this size class generally take a more varied, protein-inclusive diet than the strict algae grazers of the rocky shore, reflecting their sand and transition-zone habitat where invertebrate prey is more available than dense algal turf. Feeding behaviour specific to this population has not been documented, and no more precise detail is asserted here.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been documented for this form specifically. Non-mbuna Malawi haplochromines in this size and habitat class typically breed on sand or at the sand-rock interface, with males establishing a display site — sometimes a simple sand depression rather than a rock cave — that ripe females visit for courtship and spawning. As in mbuna, males of most non-mbuna Malawi haplochromines are expected to carry egg-spot markings on the anal fin that mimic the female's own eggs, prompting her to draw in sperm while collecting the true fertilised eggs into her mouth during spawning — the same egg-dummy fertilisation mechanism that underlies mouthbrooding reproduction across the lake's cichlid radiation, though it has not been confirmed specifically for this form.
Breeding
As in all Mylochromis and the wider Lake Malawi haplochromine radiation, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding. The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth after spawning and carries them alone through development, releasing free-swimming fry after several weeks with no further parental care. Clutch size and brooding duration have not been recorded for this form. Comparably sized non-mbuna haplochromines typically produce larger clutches than small mbuna, often several dozen eggs, reflecting their bigger adult body size. A brooding female is expected to feed little or not at all for the several weeks of mouthbrooding and to retreat to less exposed habitat until the fry are released, matching the pattern seen across Lake Malawi's maternal mouthbrooders generally.
In the aquarium
This form is not established in the aquarium trade under this name, and no husbandry account specific to it exists. Were it kept, care would follow the general Mylochromis template: a large tank with a sand substrate and rockwork limited to the transition zone rather than dense caves, hard alkaline water matching the lake, and a varied diet including protein to suit its likely invertebrate-leaning feeding habits. Were it established in the trade, a stocking approach of one male to multiple females would be standard, following general Malawi haplochromine practice, in a tank sized for its larger adult build relative to mbuna. Weekly partial water changes and stable water chemistry matching the lake matter for any Malawi cichlid, mbuna or otherwise.
Conservation
Mylochromis sp. 'lateristriga makanjila' has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and, as an undescribed form, is not currently eligible for formal assessment. Its documented range crosses three national jurisdictions along a long stretch of shoreline, which — if the localities do represent one coherent population rather than several — would limit its exposure to any single localised threat, though it shares the general pressures facing Lake Malawi's sand-dwelling cichlids: bottom trawling, sedimentation and habitat disturbance. Lake Malawi's non-mbuna haplochromines face the same basin-wide pressures as its rock-dwelling mbuna: overfishing of food species, sediment runoff from catchment deforestation, and a warming climate altering thermal stratification and deep-water oxygen levels. Sand-dwelling and transition-zone species can additionally be exposed to bottom-disturbing fishing gear in ways strict rock-dwellers are not.
