Taxonomy & naming
Mylochromis sp. "Mchuse" is not a formally described species. It has no scientific name of its own, no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, because no taxonomist has published a description establishing it. It is an informal taxon recognised in the field and aquarium literature, principally through Ad Konings's documentation of Lake Malawi's Tanzanian shore fauna. The placeholder name follows the standard convention for undescribed cichlids that lack an obvious descriptive character to hang a colour name on: the genus Mylochromis, the abbreviation "sp." (species), and the collection locality in quotation marks, here Magunga and, at species level, "Mchuse." Mylochromis is a large, taxonomically difficult genus of some two dozen described species, and northern-lake populations along the Tanzanian coast are comparatively poorly sampled and under-described relative to the better-studied Malawian shore. Until a revision addresses this population directly it should be treated strictly as a Konings-recognised undescribed form, and no authority or date should be attached to it.
Morphology
As a bare locality name rather than a colour tag, "Mchuse" does not itself describe a diagnostic pattern, and no specific colour account for this population is available from accessible references — describing one here would mean inventing it, which this atlas does not do. What can be said is the genus-typical body plan: an elongate, moderately compressed haplochromine shape with a pointed head and a terminal, often slightly protrusible mouth suited to picking prey from sand and crevices. Species across Mylochromis range from roughly 12 to over 8 in; this form is expected to fall in the genus-typical mid-size range, though no formal measurements have been published for it. As in other Mylochromis, breeding males are expected to be more strongly coloured than females, which are typically plain silvery-brown, but the specific pattern for the Mchuse population is not documented.
Habitat
This form is recorded from Magunga and Nkanda, both on the Tanzanian shore in the far northern part of Lake Malawi. The northern lake's coastline here mixes rocky headlands with open sand in the pattern typical of intermediate-habitat cichlid communities, and Mylochromis species generally use this transition zone, sheltering near rock while foraging out over sand. The water column at these sites shares the lake-wide profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, broadly in the mid-20s Celsius with pH on the alkaline side of neutral. As an undescribed, locality-based form its depth range and full distribution beyond the Magunga–Nkanda stretch of the Tanzanian coast have not been established.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study exists for this population. Mylochromis as a genus is ecologically diverse, spanning specialised piscivores, mollusc-crushers with molariform pharyngeal teeth, and generalist invertivores that pick insect larvae and small crustaceans from sand and crevices. Absent a description or stomach-content data for the Mchuse form specifically, the safest characterisation is a benthic invertivore/micro-predator foraging over sand and rock in the manner typical of the genus, rather than a claim to any more specialised diet.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been documented for this specific population, but Lake Malawi haplochromines including Mylochromis are consistently polygynous and lek-like, with males defending small territories on or near the sand-rock interface and displaying in nuptial colour to passing females. There is no pair bond. Ripe females move between territory-holding males, evaluate them by colour and site quality, and spawn briefly before departing with the clutch in the mouth. The account here follows this general genus pattern rather than any observation specific to the Mchuse form.
Breeding
Mylochromis sp. "Mchuse" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlids. Following spawning, the female is expected to carry the fertilised eggs in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during this period, before releasing free-swimming fry with no further care from either parent. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; by analogy with similarly sized Mylochromis species a modest clutch of a few dozen eggs is a reasonable expectation, not a measured fact.
In the aquarium
Mylochromis sp. "Mchuse" is a rarely traded locality form from the far northern Tanzanian shore, seen in the hobby only sporadically through specialist Malawi importers. Where it is kept, husbandry follows the general template for a sand/intermediate-habitat Mylochromis.
A tank of at least 47–59 in suits an adult group, with fine sand substrate for natural foraging and a rockwork layout that leaves generous open sand rather than dense cover throughout, since this genus is primarily a sand forager. Water chemistry should mirror Lake Malawi's profile: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7–8.6, and moderately hard to hard water, with prolonged soft or acidic conditions avoided. A single male with several females is the standard social arrangement for a polygynous haplochromine of this kind. Diet should be varied — quality pellet or flake as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates — reflecting the genus's general invertivore biology; fatty foods should be limited given the group's susceptibility to bloat. Because provenance is the main value of a locality form like this, it should not be crossed with other Mylochromis populations.
Conservation
Mylochromis sp. "Mchuse" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and as an undescribed form without a formal scientific name it has no Red List assessment of any kind. That is a statement about taxonomy, not about population safety. Populations along the Tanzanian shore of Lake Malawi face the same broad pressures as elsewhere in the lake — ornamental and food-fish collection, and localised habitat disturbance — though this stretch of coast is comparatively less intensively surveyed than the Malawian shore. No conservation status should be fabricated for it. The honest statement is that it is unassessed and that its distribution and status remain to be established by formal study.
