Mylochromis sp. "Mollis Likoma" is not a formally described species. It has no scientific name of its own, no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, because no taxonomist has published a description establishing it. It is an informal taxon recognised in the aquarium and field literature, principally through Ad Konings's documentation of the Likoma Island cichlid fauna. The placeholder name follows the standard convention for undescribed cichlids: the genus Mylochromis, the abbreviation "sp." (species), and a descriptive tag in quotation marks, here "Mollis" (Latin for soft) paired with the locality "Likoma." Mylochromis is a large, taxonomically difficult genus of some two dozen described species, several distinguished mainly by dentition and subtle colour or fin characters, and the offshore islands of the lake — Likoma among them — hold a number of locally distinct populations that have circulated for years under hobby names without formal review. Until a revision addresses this population directly, no closer taxonomic relationship should be asserted, and no authority or date should be attached to it.
Morphology
This population follows the genus-typical Mylochromis body plan: an elongate, moderately compressed haplochromine shape with a pointed head and a terminal, often slightly protrusible mouth suited to picking prey from sand and rock crevices. Species across the genus range from roughly 12 to over 8 in; without a description for the Likoma population, size is known only by analogy with similarly proportioned congeners. A specific, verified colour account for breeding males of this population is not available in accessible references, so none is asserted here beyond the general haplochromine pattern of more strongly coloured, dominant males and plainer, silvery-brown females and subordinates — the typical arrangement that lets females stay inconspicuous while brooding.
Habitat
This form is recorded from Likoma Island and the nearby smaller island of Maingano, both administratively part of Malawi despite sitting in the eastern half of the lake, closer to the Mozambican shore than to mainland Malawi. Likoma and Maingano are classic rocky-island habitat, with extensive rock reef dropping into open sand, the kind of intermediate zone many Mylochromis species use, sheltering near rock while foraging over adjoining sand. The water column here follows the lake-wide pattern: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, broadly mid-20s Celsius with pH on the alkaline side of neutral. As an undescribed, locality-based form, its depth range and any occurrence beyond the Likoma–Maingano island group are not established.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study exists for this population. Mylochromis as a genus spans specialised piscivores, mollusc-crushers with molariform pharyngeal teeth, and generalist invertivores picking insect larvae and small crustaceans from sand and crevices. Absent a description or stomach-content data specific to the Likoma "Mollis" form, the safest characterisation is a benthic invertivore/micro-predator foraging over sand and rock in the general manner of the genus, rather than a claim to a narrower feeding specialisation.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been documented for this specific population, but Lake Malawi haplochromines including Mylochromis are consistently polygynous and lek-like, with males defending small territories near the rock-sand interface and displaying in nuptial colour to passing females. There is no pair bond. Ripe females visit territory-holding males, choose largely on colour and site quality, and spawn briefly before departing with the clutch in the mouth. The account here follows this general genus pattern rather than any observation specific to the Likoma "Mollis" form.
Breeding
Mylochromis sp. "Mollis Likoma" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared by all Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlids. The female is expected to carry the fertilised eggs in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during this period, before releasing free-swimming fry with no further care from either parent. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; by analogy with similarly sized Mylochromis species a modest clutch of a few dozen eggs is a reasonable expectation rather than a measured fact.
In the aquarium
Mylochromis sp. "Mollis Likoma" is an uncommon locality form seen in the trade mainly through specialist Malawi importers working the Likoma Island fauna. Where it is kept, husbandry follows the general template for a sand/intermediate-habitat Mylochromis.
A tank of at least 47–59 in suits an adult group, with fine sand substrate for natural foraging and a rockwork layout that leaves generous open sand, reflecting the genus's preference for the rock-sand transition rather than dense cover. Water chemistry should mirror Lake Malawi's profile: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7–8.6, and moderately hard to hard water, with prolonged soft or acidic conditions avoided. A single male with several females is the standard social arrangement for a polygynous haplochromine of this kind. Diet should be varied — quality pellet or flake as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates — reflecting the genus's general invertivore biology; fatty foods should be limited given the group's susceptibility to bloat. As with other locality forms, keepers who want to preserve its Likoma provenance should avoid crossing it with other Mylochromis populations.
Conservation
Mylochromis sp. "Mollis Likoma" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and as an undescribed form without a formal scientific name it has no Red List assessment of any kind. That silence is a statement about taxonomy, not about safety. Likoma and Maingano Islands support a well-documented, distinctive rocky-shore cichlid fauna, popular with collectors and divers, and populations there face the general pressures of ornamental collection and localised habitat disturbance common to the lake's popular island sites. No conservation status should be fabricated for it. The honest statement is that it is unassessed and that its true range and status remain to be established by formal study.
