Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

"Mloto Undu" is an undescribed utaka collected at Undu Reef on the Tanzanian shore of northern Lake Malawi, traded under a locality tag built on the name of Copadichromis mloto — a species whose own identity was confused for more than sixty years before whole-genome work finally pinned it down in the 2020s. Whether the Undu Reef population is true C. mloto or one of the several distinct, still-unnamed relatives that circulate under similar "mloto"-prefixed trade names has not been resolved, and it is documented mainly by name rather than by any dedicated study.

Taxonomy & naming

Copadichromis sp. "Mloto Undu" has no formal description, no scientific authority, and no Catalog of Fishes entry; the name is an open-nomenclature trade and locality designation, not a validated binomial. It surfaces specifically in the taxonomic literature on Copadichromis mloto: writing about the fish's confused history, researchers note that in the hobby it circulates under trade tags including "Ivory Head Mloto" and several locality names — among them "Luwala Reef", "Mloto Liuli", and "Mloto Undu" — several of which may turn out to be undescribed relatives of C. mloto rather than the species itself. That caveat matters here: C. mloto was described by T. D. Iles in 1960 from Nkhata Bay but went effectively unidentified for nearly sixty years, with much of what fishermen and hobbyists called "Copadichromis virginalis" turning out, on 2022–2023 genomic re-examination, to actually be C. mloto. Against that backdrop of historically unreliable identification within the genus, a locality-tagged population like "Mloto Undu" cannot be assumed to be true C. mloto without direct examination, and none has been published for the Undu Reef fish specifically.

Morphology

No population-specific morphological description has been published for the Undu Reef fish. If it follows the pattern documented for Copadichromis mloto and its close relatives, non-breeding fish and females are expected to be plain, silvery and countershaded — the typical "pure utaka" look — while ripe males of the wider mloto group turn dark blue-black over the body and fins and develop a brilliant metallic-blue head and nape, with some populations in the complex showing a red-flushed band in the dorsal fin. Adult size in the mloto group runs to roughly 4.5–5.5 in total length. None of these figures have been confirmed for the Undu Reef population itself, and they should be read as complex-typical expectations rather than documented measurements.

Habitat

The only documented locality for this trade name is Undu Reef, on the Tanzanian shore in the northern part of Lake Malawi. Copadichromis mloto and its closest relatives are known as fish of open water and sand-to-mud bottoms rather than specialists of a single rock face, recorded across a wide depth range from shallow reef tops down past 328 ft in trawl surveys elsewhere in the lake. No depth or micro-habitat data specific to the Undu Reef population has been published. As with the rest of Lake Malawi's littoral and open-water zone, conditions here are warm, hard and strongly alkaline, consistent with the lake generally.

Feeding

No dietary study has been published for the Undu Reef population specifically. As a member of the mloto-virginalis group of utaka within Copadichromis, it is presumed to feed as its relatives do: hanging in open water and picking individual planktonic prey — copepods and other small crustaceans — from the water column with a small, highly protrusible mouth, retaining prey on a long, fine row of gill rakers rather than grazing algae from rock. This feeding guild matters beyond any single reef: utaka collectively convert the lake's plankton production into fish biomass at a scale large enough to support both larger predators and Malawi's artisanal and commercial fisheries, which net open-water shoals of Copadichromis in quantity as a food fish. That broader economic and ecological importance applies to the mloto-virginalis group as a whole, even where catch statistics do not resolve individual trade-named populations like this one.

Mating

Breeding behaviour has not been documented for the Undu Reef fish specifically. Copadichromis mloto and its close relatives follow a seasonal, lek-like breeding pattern: males in full colour establish bowers — shallow craters scraped into sand or soft substrate — that serve as courtship arenas, clustering into loose breeding aggregations that females visit to select a mate. The male's egg-spot markings on the anal fin, together with his nuptial colour, are the presumed courtship signal drawing a receptive female to spawn at his site, following the standard haplochromine template used throughout Copadichromis. No nest-building or courtship observations specific to "Mloto Undu" have been published, and this account should be read as genus- and complex-typical rather than confirmed for this population.

Breeding

As in every Copadichromis and every Lake Malawi haplochromine, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth after spawning at the male's bower and carries them, without feeding normally, through incubation, later releasing free-swimming fry once they are developed enough to fend for themselves. No clutch size, brooding duration, or seasonal timing has been documented for the Undu Reef population; genus-typical figures for the mloto-virginalis group run to a few dozen eggs over roughly two to three weeks of incubation, with no male involvement beyond spawning.

In the aquarium

Copadichromis sp. "Mloto Undu" is not a mainstream aquarium fish; it reaches keepers, when it does, as an occasional wild import aimed at specialist Malawi hobbyists rather than through the general trade. Given the taxonomic uncertainty around this trade name and the wider mloto-virginalis complex, keepers should treat the locality tag as more informative than the name itself, and should avoid mixing fish sold under this or related "mloto"/"virginalis" names with other members of the complex, since undetected hybridisation between closely related, poorly distinguished populations is a real risk. General husbandry should follow the standard for Copadichromis utaka: an open-water-oriented tank of at least 47–59 in in length with a sand substrate and modest rockwork for structure rather than dense cover, hard and strongly alkaline water matching Lake Malawi (roughly 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6), and a diet weighted toward quality prepared foods with spirulina or krill rather than fatty animal protein, to reduce the risk of Malawi bloat. It should be kept in a shoal, as is typical for open-water utaka, rather than singly.

Conservation

Copadichromis sp. "Mloto Undu" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed or unconfirmed trade form, carries no Red List status of any kind — an absence of assessment, not a certificate of safety. Its documented range, on current information, is limited to Undu Reef in northern Lake Malawi. The wider mloto-virginalis complex it is associated with includes species now formally assessed: Copadichromis mloto itself is Data Deficient with a decreasing population trend, and its close relative C. virginalis is Near Threatened, both owing substantially to intensive commercial and artisanal fishing of open-water utaka shoals across the lake. That fishery pressure is not specific to any one locality or trade-named population, and there is no reason to assume a narrow-range or offshore form like "Mloto Undu" is exempt from it, even though no population-specific data exists.
