Maylandia pyrsonotos sits within the mbuna genus Maylandia, one of two names (the other being Metriaclima) that have been applied to the same lineage of blue, vertically barred rock-dwellers since a nomenclatural dispute over which name has priority; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority that should be consulted for the currently accepted valid name. The species epithet combines the Greek "pyrsos" (fire) with "notos" (back), a straightforward description of the fiery dorsal patch that marks breeding males and separates this species by eye from the many superficially similar Maylandia and Metriaclima forms scattered around the lake's rocky shoreline. As with most of this genus, the species was defined from a combination of dentition, body proportions, and the specific male breeding colour pattern rather than any single dramatic anatomical trait — the norm for a lake whose cichlid flock has diversified mostly through colour and behaviour rather than skeletal change.
Morphology
Maylandia pyrsonotos has the standard mbuna body plan: laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied, with a small mouth carrying the fine, closely packed unicuspid to bicuspid teeth used for combing algae off rock. Adults are a modest-sized cichlid, on the order of 4–4.5 in, in keeping with most Maylandia species. Breeding males show the blue body ground colour typical of the genus overlaid with the reddish-orange dorsal flush that gives the species its name, usually strongest across the back and into the dorsal fin; vertical barring, common through the genus, may also be present. Females and non-dominant males are considerably plainer, typically a duller grey-blue or brownish tone without the fiery dorsal marking, which functions largely as a breeding-season signal in males holding territory.
Habitat
The species is documented from reefs and islands in the southeastern arm of Lake Malawi, including Nakantenga Island and the Makanjila Rocks area near the Mozambique border, both classic mbuna habitat of jumbled boulders dropping into clear water. As with all Maylandia, it is confined to rocky substrate and essentially never crosses open sand, which is why isolated reefs a few kilometres apart can carry visibly different colour populations of the same or closely related species. Water there is the typical Lake Malawi mix: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, with high dissolved oxygen in the shallow, wave-agitated zone the species favours.
Feeding
Maylandia pyrsonotos feeds by grazing the algal turf, or aufwuchs, that coats sunlit rock surfaces — a mat of filamentous algae, diatoms, and the small invertebrates living within it. The fine comb-like teeth crop this film from the rock at a shallow angle, and like other mbuna the fish defends a productive patch of turf against rival grazers rather than ranging widely to feed, since a well-tended algal garden yields more food per visit than an undefended one. This algae-forward diet is reflected in a comparatively long gut, typical of the mbuna grazing guild.
Mating
Reproduction follows the standard mbuna pattern: males hold and defend a small territory on the rocks, intensify into full breeding colour — the fiery dorsal patch prominent — and court females that pass through with quivering, lateral displays. There is no pair bond. A receptive female enters the male's territory, and spawning takes place directly on the rock surface he has cleared and defended, after which the mating system reverts to the classic mouthbrooding sequence shared across nearly all Lake Malawi haplochromines.
Breeding
As in essentially every Lake Malawi mbuna, Maylandia pyrsonotos is a maternal mouthbrooder. The female picks up her eggs immediately after laying and is drawn to the male's anal-fin egg-spots, taking in milt in the process that fertilises the clutch already held in her mouth. She then broods the eggs and subsequent fry for roughly three to four weeks without feeding, before releasing free-swimming young near cover. Clutch size for this species specifically is not well documented, but by comparison with similarly sized Maylandia it is likely on the order of a few dozen eggs. There is no paternal or biparental care.
In the aquarium
Maylandia pyrsonotos is an uncommon locality form in the trade rather than a mainstream aquarium staple, and keepers who obtain it generally follow the well-established Maylandia/Metriaclima template. A tank with a substantial rockwork background over sand, at least 47 in long, gives the fish the caves and sightline breaks it needs to reduce aggression toward tankmates and rival males. Water should mirror the lake — warm, hard, and alkaline, roughly pH 7.7 to 8.6 — and prolonged exposure to soft, acidic water causes chronic stress in Malawi cichlids. A single male with several females is the standard low-stress ratio, since a lone male in a sparse tank will harass unreceptive females relentlessly. Diet should be spirulina- or vegetable-based flake or pellet as the staple, since a high-protein diet predisposes mbuna to bloat, with the occasional small invertebrate treat.

As with any narrowly distributed reef population, its long-term security depends heavily on the health of the specific rocky habitats it is known from.
