Maylandia, honouring the German aquarist Hans J. Mayland, holds most of the classic Lake Malawi zebra-complex mbuna along with numerous related species and undescribed local forms. "Dumpy" is a recurring descriptor in the Malawi hobby trade applied to populations that are noticeably shorter and deeper-bodied than the typical elongate build of their species group, a shape variant reported from several separate localities around the lake under different "Dumpy" names. Chitimba Bay, on the lake's northern west shore, is the specific locality tied to this particular "Dumpy" population; which described or undescribed Maylandia its more typically proportioned relatives belong to has not been identified in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
As the trade name indicates, "Dumpy Chitimba" is reported as a notably short, deep-bodied form relative to typical zebra-complex proportions, a build that gives affected populations a stockier, more compact silhouette than their more elongate relatives. Beyond this body-shape distinction, the fish is expected to share the general Maylandia build: a blunt head and grazing dentition suited to scraping algae from rock. Habitat
Chitimba Bay is a sandy-shored bay on Lake Malawi's northern west shore with scattered rocky sections supporting mbuna. Like other mbuna, this form is expected to show high site fidelity to a home rock pile, rarely straying far over its lifetime — the kind of limited dispersal that Malawi researchers have long linked to the group's extreme rate of local diversification between rocky outcrops separated by even short stretches of open sand or deep water. Feeding
As in other Maylandia, this form is presumed to be an aufwuchs grazer, scraping algal film and associated diatoms and small invertebrates from rock surfaces. Its reported deep-bodied build is a matter of interest to specialist keepers comparing it against more typically proportioned relatives, but does not change any of the standard husbandry requirements for the genus. Rockwork should be built directly on the tank floor or a false bottom rather than stacked on loose substrate, both for stability and to give the fish the cave structure it needs; a primarily vegetable diet, kept light on protein, mirrors its natural grazing intake and reduces the risk of bloat, a common ailment in mbuna fed too rich a diet.

As an undescribed form, "Dumpy Chitimba" has not been assessed by the IUCN and carries no conservation status.
