Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

The origin of the name "Dolphin" is not documented in any source available here. It is possible the name alludes to some aspect of head or snout profile, since a number of Malawi trade names of this kind reference a fish's silhouette, but that reading is inference rather than a sourced fact and should be treated as such.

Morphology

Habitat

Maylandia sp. "Dolphin" is recorded from four sites on the Tanzanian shore of northern Lake Malawi — Manda, Ndonga, Thumbi Point, and Thumbi Reef — a cluster of localities within a comparatively narrow stretch of coast rather than a lake-wide distribution. This part of the lake carries the typical northern-shore mix of rocky headlands and reef structures separated by open sand, the patchwork habitat responsible for much of the lake's mbuna diversity.

As with other zebra-complex Maylandia, the fish is expected to live on rock rather than open sand. Lake-wide conditions in the upper rocky zone run roughly 24-28 degC and pH 7.7-8.6, hard and alkaline, with mbuna habitat generally found from a few metres to about 66 ft depth; no site-specific depth record exists for this form beyond those general figures.

Feeding

Maylandia sp. "Dolphin" is presumed, on genus grounds, to be an aufwuchs grazer, feeding on the algae, diatoms, and associated micro-invertebrates that coat sunlit rock throughout its recorded range. This assignment follows directly from its placement in the Maylandia zebra complex, whose dentition and gut anatomy are built for scraping hard surfaces rather than hunting or filtering; no feeding study specific to this population is available to confirm the details.

That dentition, combined with a comparatively long gut adapted to digesting plant material, is a genus-wide trait rather than a feature confirmed specifically for this population. In practice this means the fish should be assumed to need the same plant-heavy diet as every other zebra-complex Maylandia, described further under In the aquarium below.

Mating

Social behaviour has not been documented specifically for this form. By analogy with Maylandia and Lake Malawi mbuna generally, mature males are expected to hold individual rocky territories and display to passing females, with aggression concentrated against similarly coloured rivals, potentially including other zebra-complex Maylandia sharing the same reef. Females are not territorial and move between males' territories rather than holding ground of their own.

The mechanics of courtship follow the pattern documented across Malawi mbuna: a colour-bearing male performs a quivering lateral display in front of an approaching female, leading her toward his territory rather than pursuing her into open water. Persistent, low-level pressure toward non-receptive females is normal mbuna behaviour and is the main reason a single male is always kept with several females in captivity, spreading his attention and reducing the risk that any one female is harassed to exhaustion.

Breeding

As in every Lake Malawi haplochromine, reproduction is presumed to follow the maternal mouthbrooding pattern fixed across the family: the female takes fertilised eggs into her mouth at the male's territory, drawing sperm from him via the egg-spot markings on his anal fin, and broods the clutch orally for roughly three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. No clutch size or brooding-period record specific to this form exists; genus-typical broods for similarly sized Maylandia run to a few dozen eggs, with no paternal care after fertilisation.

The egg-spot mechanism behind this process is one of the more distinctive features of Lake Malawi cichlid biology: the yellow-orange markings on the male's anal fin closely mimic the fish's own eggs in size and colour, and the female's instinct to gather stray eggs into her mouth is what draws her toward the male's vent, where she takes in sperm instead. This indirect fertilisation method, shared across virtually the entire haplochromine radiation of the lake, lets fertilisation happen without either fish releasing gametes into open water where they would be exposed and vulnerable.

In the aquarium

Maylandia sp. "Dolphin" is a scarce trade fish reaching hobbyists mainly through specialist Malawi cichlid importers rather than general retail. Husbandry follows the standard zebra-complex Maylandia template in the absence of form-specific guidance: a tank of at least 47 in with dense rockwork over sand, hard alkaline water (pH roughly 7.8-8.6, temperature 24-28 degC), and a plant-forward diet of spirulina flake, pellet, and algae wafers, with meaty foods kept to a minimum since protein-heavy feeding predisposes mbuna to bloat.

A single male with several females is the standard low-conflict grouping. As with all undescribed Malawi locality forms, it should be kept apart from other Maylandia populations to avoid hybridisation and to preserve its value as a distinct, traceable trade form.

Conservation

No IUCN assessment exists for Maylandia sp. "Dolphin" because it has never been formally described; evaluation requires a valid scientific name. Its recorded range along the Tanzanian shore near Manda and Thumbi Point shares the general pressures facing Lake Malawi's inshore rocky habitat — sedimentation from catchment disturbance, warming surface waters, and cumulative fishery pressure across the basin. Formal description would be the prerequisite for any future Red List evaluation; until then its status is properly recorded as unassessed.

The wider Lake Malawi cichlid fauna is already recognised as under pressure: the lake's fisheries and freshwater ecosystems face documented stress from catchment deforestation, agricultural runoff, and a warming, increasingly stratified water column, problems that fall on described and undescribed cichlids alike regardless of their taxonomic status. A trade name and a place in the aquarium hobby are not a substitute for formal assessment, but they do mean this form's population is at least being watched by people with a direct interest in its continued survival at its collection sites.
