Taxonomy & naming
Maylandia sp. 'aggressive bars' is an undescribed member of the zebra mbuna radiation, the genus of vertically barred rock-dwellers that gives Lake Malawi's reefs much of their colour. As with every trade-named Maylandia form, it has no describing author, no type specimen and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes; the binomial-style name used here is a convenience, not a taxonomic one. The trade name itself is descriptive rather than honorific: 'bars' for the pattern and 'aggressive' for behaviour that field observers and aquarists alike have flagged as unusually intense. It is not currently linked in the literature to one specific described Maylandia as its closest relative, and no such claim is made here.
Morphology
The name signals a male colour pattern of strong, dark, evenly spaced vertical bars set against a blue ground colour, read by collectors as more contrasty than in many congeners sharing the same reefs. Beyond that description implied by the trade name, a formal account of fin shape, bar count or female colouration has not been published, and this article does not invent one. In general build it follows the compact, laterally compressed, deep-bodied plan shared by all Maylandia, with the dense rows of fine bicuspid teeth used for shearing algae off rock, and males larger than females at maturity as is typical of the genus. Precise measurements — standard length, body depth ratio, fin ray counts — have not been published for this form, and none are estimated here beyond the genus-typical range. Sexual size dimorphism in mbuna generally favours males, which grow larger and hold territories, while females stay smaller and range more freely between reefs. Juveniles of most mbuna, including this genus, are typically drab or barred regardless of eventual sex, with the adult colour pattern and sexual dichromatism developing only as fish approach maturity.
Habitat
Documented localities span a long, mostly rocky stretch of central Lake Malawi on both shores: Ndumbi Rocks, Taiwanee Reef and Hora Mhango on the Malawi side, and Tumbi Point, Nkhungu Reef, Minos Reef and Chiloelo on the Mozambique side opposite. That spread, roughly 155 mi of coastline, suggests a form (or set of closely related populations sharing the trade name) distributed across intermediate and rocky habitat rather than confined to a single reef. Like other Maylandia it is expected to hold to rock and the rock-sand interface, avoiding open sand and deep water. Lake Malawi's rocky shoreline experiences strong wave action near the surface, and mbuna reefs typically grade from bare, wave-swept rock in the shallows to more sheltered crevice habitat with depth. Water chemistry is essentially uniform throughout the lake's oxygenated upper layer — hard and strongly alkaline — so differences between reefs are mostly about rock structure, wave exposure and depth rather than water quality.
Feeding
No feeding study specific to this form has been published. By genus, Maylandia are aufwuchs grazers, rasping the algae-and-diatom film off sunlit rock with comb-like teeth and taking small invertebrates from within that film opportunistically. Territorial males feed largely within reach of the patch of reef they defend, which ties their condition directly to local algal growth and light. Mbuna have relatively long, coiled intestines adapted to a diet dominated by plant matter, and captive keepers generally avoid high-protein foods, since a rich diet is strongly linked to so-called Malawi bloat, an often fatal intestinal distension seen in aufwuchs-grazing cichlids fed inappropriately. In the wild, territorial males spend much of the day tending and re-grazing the same patch of algae, effectively farming it, and chase off both rival males and other grazing species that intrude on the territory.
Mating
Breeding males are expected to hold small cave or crevice territories on rock, in the standard lek-like, non-pair-bonding system of the genus, defending the site against rivals and displaying to ripe females that enter it. The reported aggression behind the trade name is plausibly an extension of this territorial defence rather than a distinct courtship behaviour, though that connection has not been formally studied. As in other mbuna, males are expected to carry egg-spot markings on the anal fin that mimic the female's own eggs; during spawning, while the female collects the true fertilised eggs into her mouth, she is thought to peck at these spots, prompting the male to release sperm that she draws in, completing fertilisation inside her mouth. This egg-spot mechanism underlies mouthbrooding reproduction across Lake Malawi's cichlid radiation generally, and a male typically maintains and repeatedly refreshes his territory across many spawning cycles with different females rather than forming any lasting pair bond with one partner.
Breeding
As in every Maylandia, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding. After spawning at the male's site, the female collects the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them alone, releasing free-swimming fry after roughly three to four weeks with no further care from either parent. Clutch size has not been recorded for this form specifically but is expected to fall in the range typical of similarly sized congeners, a few dozen eggs. Comparably sized mbuna typically produce clutches in the range of 15 to 40 eggs, with larger, more experienced females producing more. A brooding female usually stops feeding or feeds only lightly for the duration, loses visible condition, and seeks out sheltered, less exposed parts of the reef until the fry are released; newly released fry often dart back into the mother's mouth at the first sign of danger for a few additional days before becoming fully independent.
In the aquarium
This form is occasionally available through specialist Malawi cichlid importers under its trade name rather than as an established staple. Its reputed temperament argues for generous rockwork with multiple broken sightlines and more than one male-sized territory per tank if kept with conspecifics, plus tankmates that are not slow or similarly barred. Standard Malawi mbuna husbandry applies: a long tank of at least 47 in, hard alkaline water, and a vegetable-leaning, spirulina-based diet to avoid bloat. A stocking ratio of one male to three or more females is standard practice for mbuna, spreading territorial and spawning attention and reducing stress on any single female. Weekly partial water changes and efficient filtration matter given the bioload of a densely stocked mbuna tank, and abrupt swings in water chemistry should be avoided, since Malawi cichlids are adapted to the lake's remarkably stable conditions.
Conservation
Maylandia sp. 'aggressive bars' has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; as an undescribed form it is not eligible for formal assessment. Its documented range crosses the Malawi-Mozambique border along a substantial stretch of shoreline, which if accurate would make it less vulnerable to a single localised disturbance than a single-reef endemic, though ornamental collection pressure and shoreline degradation are risks shared across Lake Malawi's rocky-shore mbuna. Lake Malawi as a whole faces mounting pressure from overfishing of food species, sediment runoff tied to catchment deforestation, and a warming climate altering the lake's thermal stratification and deep-water oxygen levels. The ornamental trade is a comparatively minor pressure next to the food fishery by volume, and well-managed collection can give local communities a direct economic incentive to protect reef habitat, though that balance depends heavily on how any particular fishery is run.
