Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Maylandia sp. "Taiwan" is an undescribed mbuna from Taiwanee Reef, in central Lake Malawi. Taiwanee Reef is a well-surveyed collection point that has given its name to trade forms in several unrelated genera; this population is the Maylandia specifically associated with that reef, and other populations sharing the 'Taiwan' name at different sites are treated by hobbyists as related but geographically distinct. It has not been formally described.

Taxonomy & naming

Maylandia sp. "Taiwan" carries no describing author, no type specimen, and no listing in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Its name derives from Taiwanee Reef, its collection point in central Lake Malawi, and does not refer to the country of Taiwan. Taiwanee Reef is one of the lake's more thoroughly surveyed sites and has produced named trade forms in several unrelated genera, a pattern also seen at other well-collected reefs. This population represents the Maylandia recorded at that specific reef; whether it should ultimately be regarded as a distinct species or folded into a described Maylandia has not been settled.

Morphology

Maylandia sp. "Taiwan" shares the compact, laterally compressed zebra-mbuna body plan and comb-like bicuspid dentition typical of the genus. No published morphometric description or detailed colour account exists for this specific population. Consistent with other Maylandia, males are expected to be the more strongly coloured sex and females the duller, more barred or brownish sex, but this account does not assign a specific colour pattern beyond that general expectation, since none has been documented for this population.

Habitat

This form is documented from Taiwanee Reef in central Lake Malawi. As with other rock-dwelling Maylandia, it is expected to be confined to rocky and rock-sand transition habitat rather than open sand or deep water, in the hard, alkaline water typical of the entire lake.

Feeding

No feeding study specific to this population has been published. Like other Maylandia it is presumed to graze aufwuchs, the algae and diatom film coating sunlit rock, scraping it loose with the fine, densely packed teeth characteristic of the genus and taking small invertebrates from within that film opportunistically.

Mating

Mating behaviour has not been documented for this population specifically. Maylandia generally follow the standard lek-like mbuna system: males hold and defend small rock or cave territories without pair bonding, displaying to and courting ripe females that enter the territory.

Breeding

Reproduction follows the standard Maylandia pattern of maternal mouthbrooding: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth after spawning and broods them alone, typically for three to four weeks, before releasing free-swimming fry with no further parental involvement from either parent. Clutch size for this population specifically has not been documented.

In the aquarium

This form is not established under this exact name in the general aquarium trade, and no dedicated husbandry record exists for it. Were it kept, care would follow standard Maylandia husbandry: a long tank with dense rockwork offering multiple broken sightlines and cave territories, hard alkaline water in the mid-20s Celsius, and a vegetable-forward, spirulina-based diet, with high-protein foods minimised given the genus's susceptibility to Malawi bloat.

Conservation

Maylandia sp. "Taiwan" has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, and as an undescribed form it is not currently eligible for formal assessment. Its documented range is a single reef, and no dedicated survey of collecting pressure or habitat condition there has been published, so its status is best described as unevaluated and effectively unknown.
