Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Tropheops sp. "Aurora" is undescribed: it has no holotype, no authority, no publication year, and no entry of its own in Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes. Tropheops was erected by Trewavas in 1984 to hold a group of specialist algae-scraping mbuna previously included within the broadly defined old Pseudotropheus, unified by a short, blunt head profile and thick lips adapted for browsing rock. The genus is exceptionally diverse at the population level — Ad Konings and other field workers have documented dozens of distinct locality colour forms across the lake, most never formally described, of which "Aurora" is one, recorded from the Mbamba Bay area on the Tanzanian shore. "Aurora" is a purely descriptive trade epithet, taken from the Latin word for dawn, evidently chosen for a warm, glowing male colour pattern rather than any diagnostic morphological character.

Morphology

Like other Tropheops, this form has the genus’s characteristic short, steeply sloped head and thick, fleshy lips overlying fine, closely set teeth adapted for browsing algal turf. Genus-typical adult size runs roughly 3–4.5 in, males slightly larger than females. The name "Aurora" suggests males display a warm, dawn-like colouration — likely orange, gold or red tones, following the convention used for similarly named Tropheops forms elsewhere in the lake — though the precise pattern has not been documented in any published account, and no formal measurements or meristic data exist for this population. Females, as in other Tropheops, are expected to be plainer and less contrastingly coloured than males.

Habitat

This form has been recorded from Higga Reef, Mbamba Bay, Ndonga, Njambe and Thumbi Point, a cluster of sites on the Tanzanian shore near the northern end of the lake — an area historically less surveyed than the Malawian side and correspondingly rich in undescribed locality forms. Like other Tropheops it occupies rocky habitat, typically the shallow-to-moderate rock faces, roughly 7–49 ft, where algal turf is most productive. Water conditions follow Lake Malawi’s norm: warm, hard and alkaline, roughly 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6.

Feeding

Tropheops sp. "Aurora" is an algae grazer in the manner typical of its genus, using its thick, fleshy lips and fine, closely packed teeth to browse algal turf from rock surfaces. The distinctive blunt, downturned head of Tropheops is thought to aid this close, precise cropping of algae at an angle to the rock face, a slightly different technique from the more aggressive scraping of genera like Petrotilapia. As with other algae grazers, the practical diet includes the diatoms and small invertebrates embedded within the algal mat as well as the algae itself.

Mating

The mating system follows the standard mbuna pattern: polygynous and lek-like, with no pair bond. Males hold and defend a feeding-and-breeding territory on rock, often centred on a small cave or crevice, and display their nuptial colour to attract passing females rather than forming exclusive pairs. Courtship follows the typical haplochromine sequence of quivering and circling that precedes spawning, which generally takes place within or near the male’s territory. No specific behavioural documentation exists for this named population; the account here follows the well-established pattern for Tropheops generally.

Breeding

Tropheops sp. "Aurora" is a maternal mouthbrooder, as is every member of its genus. Following spawning, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during this period, before releasing free-swimming fry that receive no further parental care. Clutch size has not been documented for this specific population; Tropheops of comparable size typically produce clutches in the range of 15–30 eggs.

In the aquarium

Tropheops sp. "Aurora" should be kept as a standard rock-dwelling mbuna. Extensive, stable rockwork built into a tank of at least 47 in gives territorial males room to establish separate holdings; a sand or fine gravel substrate suits the setup well.

Water chemistry should replicate Lake Malawi: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and consistently hard, alkaline conditions. Diet should be predominantly vegetable-based, with a spirulina-forward flake or pellet as the staple, since Tropheops are committed herbivores whose digestive systems are poorly suited to high-protein, high-fat foods; such foods are strongly implicated in Malawi bloat. As with other territorial mbuna, keep a surplus of females per male and house it with similarly robust tankmates rather than gentler community fish. Because it is undescribed and recorded from a single locality cluster, preserving accurate provenance is worthwhile for anyone maintaining a breeding group.

Conservation

No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Tropheops sp. "Aurora", and none can while it remains formally undescribed. No status, category or year should be attached to it. The Tanzanian shore of Lake Malawi has drawn comparatively little survey and collecting attention relative to the Malawian side, meaning both this form’s true range and any pressures on it — ornamental collection, localised habitat disturbance — remain poorly documented. The accurate statement is that it is unevaluated.
