Taxonomy & naming
Tropheops sp. "Masimbwe" is undescribed and has no holotype, authority, publication year, or entry of its own in Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes. Tropheops was erected by Trewavas in 1984 for the lake’s blunt-headed, thick-lipped algae-scraping mbuna, a genus in which field workers have named a large number of locality-based colour forms, most never formally described. "Masimbwe" is used here as a locality-derived trade name for a population recorded across the southern lake — Harbour Island, Thumbi East Island, Crocodile Rocks, Mvunguti and Kadango — rather than a formal geographic type locality, and the form should be treated as informally recognised pending any taxonomic review of the genus in this part of the lake.
Morphology
This form shows the standard Tropheops build: a short, steeply sloped head, thick fleshy lips, and a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, with genus-typical size of roughly 3–4.5 in and males somewhat larger than females. No published description exists to specify this population’s colour pattern or distinguish it from other southern-lake Tropheops beyond its recorded localities, so no colour claim should be made beyond noting, as in the genus generally, that males are expected to be more strongly coloured than the plainer females. No formal measurements or meristic data exist for this population.
Habitat
Recorded from Crocodile Rocks, Harbour Island, Kadango, Mvunguti and Thumbi East Island, this form spans a stretch of the southern Malawian shore running from the well-studied Monkey Bay area — home to Harbour Island and Thumbi East Island — south to Kadango, near where Lake Malawi narrows toward the Shire River outlet. Habitat follows the genus-typical pattern: shallow-to-moderate rocky reef, roughly 7–49 ft, in the lake’s warm, hard, alkaline water (75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6).
Feeding
Tropheops sp. "Masimbwe" is an algae grazer in the manner typical of its genus, using thick lips and fine, closely packed teeth to browse algal turf from rock surfaces. As with other Tropheops, the practical diet includes the diatoms and small invertebrates embedded in the algal mat along with the algae itself. No dedicated feeding study exists for this specific population; the description follows the well-documented ecology of the genus.
Mating
The mating system follows the standard mbuna pattern: polygynous and lek-like, with no pair bond. Males hold and defend a feeding-and-breeding territory on rock, often centred on a small cave or crevice, displaying to attract passing females rather than forming exclusive pairs. Courtship follows the typical haplochromine sequence of quivering and circling before spawning takes place within or near the male’s territory. No specific behavioural documentation exists for this named population.
Breeding
This form is a maternal mouthbrooder, as is every member of Tropheops. Following spawning, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during this period, before releasing free-swimming fry with no further parental care. Clutch size has not been documented for this specific population; Tropheops of comparable size typically produce clutches of 15–30 eggs.
In the aquarium
Tropheops sp. "Masimbwe" should be kept as a standard rock-dwelling mbuna, with extensive, stable rockwork in a tank of at least 47 in to give territorial males room to hold separate patches; sand or fine gravel suits the substrate.
Water chemistry should replicate Lake Malawi: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and consistently hard, alkaline conditions. Diet should be predominantly vegetable-based, with a spirulina-forward flake or pellet as the staple and high-fat, high-protein foods minimised to reduce the risk of Malawi bloat. Keep a surplus of females per male and house it with similarly robust mbuna tankmates rather than gentler community fish. As with any undescribed form, preserving accurate provenance matters if the intent is to maintain it as a distinct, documented locality population.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Tropheops sp. "Masimbwe", and none can while it remains formally undescribed. No status, category or year should be attached to it. As a rocky-shore mbuna of the well-studied southern lake, it is exposed to the general pressures on that region’s cichlid fauna — ornamental collection and localised habitat disturbance around popular collecting and diving sites near Monkey Bay — but no data specific to this population exist. The accurate statement is that it is unevaluated.
