Tropheops sp. "Mauve Yellow" is an informal trade name with no accompanying formal description, no describing author, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Its placement in the genus Tropheops follows the same anatomical grounds used across the genus — a blunt head and the comb-like outer teeth used to graze algae from rock, distinguishing it from the more generalist Pseudotropheus. The name "Mauve Yellow" is descriptive of the reported male breeding colour rather than a reference to any particular collector or locality. Because no dedicated published description of this form exists beyond its recognition as a distinct locality-based colour form by aquarium hobbyists and collectors, less can be said with confidence about its precise relationships within Tropheops than for some of the genus's better-documented trade forms; it should be treated as a working label pending formal study.
Morphology
Tropheops sp. "Mauve Yellow" shares the compact, blunt-headed body plan typical of the genus, with the thick lips and dense rows of comb-like teeth used to scrape aufwuchs from rock. The trade name indicates that breeding males show a mauve (purplish-grey) body tone set off by yellow markings, a colour combination consistent with the strong sexual dichromatism typical of Tropheops, in which territorial males carry saturated colour year-round while females and non-territorial fish remain comparatively plain and cryptically marked. Beyond what the name itself conveys, no independently published description of this form's precise colour pattern, fin markings, or size is available, so specific claims beyond the genus-typical pattern are avoided here.
Habitat
This form is recorded from a scattered set of rocky localities spanning the Tanzanian, Malawian, and Mozambican shores of the northern half of the lake, from Cape Kaiser and Lupingu in the north to Minos Reef and Chiloelo further south on the Mozambican coast. As with other Tropheops it occupies rocky habitat rather than open sand, typically in the wave-influenced shallow-to-intermediate zone where algal turf is productive enough to support a grazing mbuna. Water conditions follow the lake's standard chemistry: warm, hard, and alkaline, with temperature in the mid-20s Celsius and pH on the alkaline side of neutral.
Feeding
Tropheops sp. "Mauve Yellow" grazes aufwuchs from rock surfaces, the standard feeding mode for the genus, using its comb-like outer teeth to scrape the mixed film of algae, diatoms, and associated micro-invertebrates from sunlit rock. This ties it, like other Tropheops, closely to shallow, wave-exposed rocky habitat where algal growth is dense, and it is not known to take substantial quantities of animal prey beyond what is incidentally present in the aufwuchs it scrapes. The aufwuchs itself is not a single food but a whole microhabitat -- filamentous and diatomaceous algae bound up with detritus and the small invertebrates that live within it -- so a grazing mbuna takes in a mixed, protein-and-fibre diet in a single bite rather than pure plant matter. Because algal turf grows fastest where sunlight and wave action are both strong, feeding activity and territorial defence of good grazing patches are concentrated in the same shallow, wave-exposed rock that territorial males also use for breeding, tying the two behaviours to the same stretch of habitat.
Mating
Breeding behaviour has not been separately documented for this specific form, but Tropheops as a genus follows a consistent pattern: territorial males hold and defend small rock territories, displaying their breeding colouration to attract passing females, with no pair bond and no male parental involvement beyond courtship and fertilisation. Given the shared anatomy and habitat with better-studied Tropheops species, this form is expected to follow the same template. As in other maternal mouthbrooders of the lake, the male's anal fin carries egg-spot markings -- round, egg-like blotches of colour -- that play a role in courtship: a female collecting her own eggs after spawning is drawn to peck at these spots as though they were additional eggs, and in doing so takes in the sperm needed to fertilise the clutch she already holds. This egg-spot mechanism is one of the more thoroughly documented features of haplochromine courtship across Lake Malawi and is assumed, by strong genus-level precedent, to operate in this form as well.
Breeding
As in all Lake Malawi haplochromines, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding: the female collects fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning and broods them for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental care from either parent. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; by analogy with similarly sized Tropheops, a clutch of a few dozen eggs is a reasonable expectation. After release, free-swimming fry of Lake Malawi cichlids typically seek out shallow, structurally complex refuge -- crevices among rocks or, for sand-associated species, cover near the shoreline -- where they are less exposed to predators than in open water, sometimes continuing to shelter near the mother for a short period even though she provides no further direct care once they are released.
In the aquarium
Tropheops sp. "Mauve Yellow" is kept in the standard mbuna community aquarium: a rock-dominated tank over a fine sand base, with rockwork arranged into distinct piles and clear sightline breaks so a dominant male does not monopolise the whole tank. A footprint of at least 47 in suits a harem group.
Water should replicate Lake Malawi conditions: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, and moderately hard to hard water, kept stable. Diet should lean vegetable, with a spirulina-based flake or pellet as the staple and only occasional protein-rich foods, since excess protein is strongly linked to bloat in mbuna. One male to several females is the standard stocking ratio, and — as with all locality-based Tropheops forms — this population should be kept apart from similarly coloured relatives to avoid diluting its distinct line.
Conservation
Tropheops sp. "Mauve Yellow" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form without a formal scientific name, has no Red List assessment of any kind. Its scattered, multi-country distribution across Tanzanian, Malawian, and Mozambican shores suggests it is not confined to a single locality, but like other rock-restricted mbuna it is likely present only at specific reefs within that range rather than continuously along the shoreline, and localised over-collection remains a plausible concern at any given site. No conservation status should be attached to it until a formal taxonomic description and assessment are published.
