Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Tropheops sp. "Elongatus Mbako" is undescribed and has no holotype, authority, publication year, or entry of its own in Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes. Tropheops was erected by Trewavas in 1984 for a group of specialist algae-scraping mbuna unified by a blunt head and thick lips; within it, as within several other Lake Malawi mbuna genera, an "elongatus" body-shape grade is informally recognised — populations distinctly more slender than the typical Tropheops build, an adaptation for living in narrower rock crevices. Because this grade recurs independently across the lake and across genera, "elongatus" populations named from different localities are not necessarily close relatives of one another, and this form should be treated as its own population, associated with the Likoma Island area and named additionally for the locality "Mbako," pending any formal taxonomic review.

Morphology

The defining trait is body shape: distinctly more elongated and slender than the typical deep-bodied Tropheops, an adaptation that allows the fish to retreat into narrower rock crevices than its stockier relatives can use for shelter. Genus-typical size for elongatus-grade Tropheops runs roughly 3–4 in, males somewhat larger. As with other elongate mbuna, males are expected to show more saturated colouration — commonly blue with dark vertical barring in this body-shape group — than the plainer females, though no formal colour description exists for this specific population. No published measurements or meristic data are available.

Habitat

This form has been recorded from Cobwe, Hai Reef, Likoma Island, Maingano Island and Undu Reef, spanning Malawian waters around Likoma Island and nearby Tanzanian sites in the north-central lake. Likoma Island, a Malawian island close to the Mozambican shore, is a well-known site of locally distinct cichlid populations owing to its relative isolation. Like other elongatus-grade mbuna, this form likely favours rocky habitat rich in narrow crevices and overhangs rather than open rock faces, in the lake’s typical shallow-to-moderate depths, roughly 7–49 ft, and warm, hard, alkaline water (75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6).

Feeding

Tropheops sp. "Elongatus Mbako" is expected to be an algae grazer in the manner typical of its genus, using thick lips and fine, closely packed teeth to browse algal turf from rock. Its slender body plan lets it work turf within narrow crevices less accessible to bulkier Tropheops and other mbuna, a niche shared with other elongatus-grade fish across the lake. No dedicated dietary study exists for this population; the description follows the well-documented feeding ecology of the genus and body-shape grade generally.

Mating

The mating system is expected to follow the standard mbuna pattern: polygynous and lek-like, with no pair bond. Because elongatus-grade fish rely on narrow crevices for shelter, males likely hold breeding territories centred on such crevices rather than open rock faces, displaying from the entrance to attract passing females. Courtship follows the typical haplochromine sequence before spawning takes place within or near the sheltered territory. No behavioural documentation specific to this named population exists.

Breeding

This form is a maternal mouthbrooder, as is every member of Tropheops. Following spawning, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during this period, before releasing free-swimming fry with no further parental care. Clutch size has not been documented for this specific population; small to medium Tropheops typically produce clutches in the range of 15–25 eggs.

Tropheops sp. "Elongatus Mbako" needs rockwork built with particular attention to narrow crevices and tunnels, reflecting its elongated body’s adaptation for tight spaces, in a tank of at least 47 in to give territorial males room to hold separate crevices without constant conflict; sand or fine gravel suits the substrate.

Water should replicate Lake Malawi: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and consistently hard, alkaline chemistry. Diet should be predominantly vegetable-based, with a spirulina-forward flake or pellet as the staple and high-fat, high-protein foods minimised. As with other territorial mbuna, keep a surplus of females per male and house alongside similarly robust tankmates. Because it is undescribed, keepers who acquire it should preserve accurate locality records rather than mixing stock from different sites.

Conservation

No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Tropheops sp. "Elongatus Mbako", and none can while it remains formally undescribed. No status, category or year should be attached to it. As a form associated with Likoma Island and nearby sites, it is exposed to the general pressures on Lake Malawi’s island-associated cichlid fauna — principally ornamental collection — but no data specific to this population exist. The accurate statement is that it is unevaluated.
