Tropheops sp. "Lilac" is an undescribed Lake Malawi mbuna, known only by this trade name on the malawi.si database and among specialist hobbyists. It has no valid scientific name, no describing author, and no publication date, and none should be attached to it. The "sp." plus quoted-name format follows the standard open-nomenclature convention used across Malawi's many undescribed cichlids.
The name is transparently descriptive, referring to the lilac or lavender-blue body colour developed by breeding males. This follows the common pattern for Tropheops trade names, which are very often simple colour descriptors — "Red," "Orange Chest," "Yellow Chin" and similar labels appear throughout the genus, reflecting the fact that Tropheops forms are distinguished from one another primarily by colour rather than by body shape, which is comparatively conservative across the genus.
Tropheops itself was erected by Trewavas in 1984, split out from the older, broader Pseudotropheus for a group of mbuna sharing a distinctively steep, blunt head profile adapted for close-in algae grazing. The genus is one of the most speciose groups of undescribed forms in the lake: because many populations are geographically isolated on separate reefs and islands and diverge in colour without diverging much in shape, taxonomists have been reluctant to formally describe every distinguishable colour form, leaving dozens recognised only by trade name.
Morphology
Tropheops sp. "Lilac" follows the genus-typical body plan: a moderately deep, laterally compressed mbuna with the steep, blunt-snouted head and closely packed, comb-like teeth that define Tropheops as a genus, adapted for cropping a fine algal turf close to the rock surface. Adult size has not been separately documented for this form; genus-typical size for Tropheops runs roughly 3–4.5 in total length, at the smaller end of the mbuna range.
The documented distinguishing trait is colour: breeding males show a lilac to lavender-blue body tone, the feature that gives the form its trade name, though the fine detail of pattern (barring, fin colour, any facial markings) has not been separately documented in the sources consulted here. Females are expected to be considerably plainer, typically brownish, in keeping with the pronounced sexual dichromatism typical of the genus.
Habitat
All four documented localities for this form — Chidunga Rocks, Mkondiwa Reef, Mumbo Island, and Nakantenga Island — lie in the southern part of Lake Malawi National Park around Cape Maclear, a small area of granite headlands and offshore islands that has produced an unusually dense concentration of distinct Tropheops colour forms, each often confined to a single rocky point or island. This pattern reflects the mbuna's strong site fidelity and the way stretches of open sand between rocky outcrops restrict gene flow between otherwise nearby populations.
As with Tropheops generally, the fish is a specialist of shallow, wave-exposed rock rather than deep or sandy habitat, since its feeding style depends on fine algal turf that grows best in well-lit, higher-energy water. Lake Malawi's upper rocky zone runs broadly 24-28 degC and pH 7.7-8.6, hard and alkaline, with Tropheops habitat typically concentrated from the surface down to roughly 33–49 ft. No site-specific depth record exists for this particular form.
Feeding
Tropheops as a genus are specialist aufwuchs grazers, distinguished from other mbuna by a steep, blunt head and dense rows of fine, closely packed teeth adapted for cropping algal turf very close to the rock surface, in shallower and often more wave-exposed water than many other mbuna use. This form is presumed to feed the same way, though no feeding study specific to this population has been published; the assignment follows from genus membership rather than direct observation.
This intensive, close-cropping feeding style lets Tropheops exploit algal turf too short for less specialised mbuna to use efficiently, a genus-wide ecological niche rather than a trait separately documented for this specific colour form.
Mating
Social behaviour has not been documented specifically for this form. By analogy with Tropheops generally, mature males are expected to hold small, densely packed rock territories — Cape Maclear's Tropheops populations are known for occupying rock faces at high density, with neighbouring males' territories often directly adjoining — and to display their breeding colour to passing females while driving off rivals, particularly those of similar colouration. Females are not territorial and move between territories.
The mechanics of courtship follow the pattern documented across Malawi mbuna: a colour-bearing male performs a quivering lateral display in front of an approaching female, leading her toward his territory rather than pursuing her into open water. Persistent, low-level pressure toward non-receptive females is normal mbuna behaviour and is the main reason a single male is always kept with several females in captivity, spreading his attention and reducing the risk that any one female is harassed to exhaustion.
Breeding
Reproduction is presumed to follow the standard Lake Malawi maternal mouthbrooding pattern: the female takes eggs into her mouth at the male's territory, draws in sperm via the egg-spot markings on his anal fin, and broods the fertilised clutch orally for roughly three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. No clutch size has been documented for this specific form; genus-typical broods for small Tropheops run roughly 10-25 eggs, with no paternal care after fertilisation.
The egg-spot mechanism behind this process is one of the more distinctive features of Lake Malawi cichlid biology: the yellow-orange markings on the male's anal fin closely mimic the fish's own eggs in size and colour, and the female's instinct to gather stray eggs into her mouth is what draws her toward the male's vent, where she takes in sperm instead. This indirect fertilisation method, shared across virtually the entire haplochromine radiation of the lake, lets fertilisation happen without either fish releasing gametes into open water where they would be exposed and vulnerable.
In the aquarium
Tropheops sp. "Lilac" is a scarce trade fish outside dedicated Malawi cichlid circles, more likely to be found through specialist importers working with named Cape Maclear locality forms than through general retail. Husbandry follows the standard Tropheops template: a tank of at least 47 in with dense rockwork over sand providing many small territories, hard alkaline water (pH roughly 7.8-8.6, temperature 24-28 degC), and strong water movement and lighting to support the algal growth the species depends on.
Diet must be plant-forward — spirulina-based flake or pellet, algae wafers, blanched vegetables — with meaty foods withheld or given only sparingly; Tropheops, like other mbuna, is prone to the intestinal bloating syndrome associated with high-protein feeding. A single male with several females is the standard low-conflict grouping, though Tropheops can be kept at comparatively high density relative to body size given enough broken rockwork, reflecting the tightly packed territories seen in the wild. As with all undescribed locality forms, keep it apart from other Tropheops colour forms to prevent hybridisation and preserve its value as a distinct trade fish.
Conservation
Tropheops sp. "Lilac" has never been formally described and carries no IUCN Red List assessment of any kind; evaluation requires a valid scientific name. Its range lies within Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with formal protected status, which affords it more legal protection from direct habitat disturbance than most of the lake's cichlid fauna, though the park's protection does not extend to broader lake-wide pressures such as warming surface waters and sedimentation from outside its boundaries. Formal description would be the prerequisite for any future Red List evaluation; until then its status is properly recorded as unassessed.
