Tropheops sp. 'membe' has no describing author, no type specimen, and no listing in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. As with most trade-named mbuna, 'membe' functions as a locality- or collector-linked hobby label rather than a Latinised epithet, and this account does not guess at a meaning that is not documented. It belongs to Tropheops, the genus of blunt-headed, thick-lipped rock mbuna split from the broader Pseudotropheus tropheops complex; a specific described sister species has not been identified for this form in the literature available here. Field studies of the tropheops complex generally have noted that its constituent forms often remain remarkably uniform across tens of kilometres of intervening sand, unlike some other Malawi mbuna radiations where distinct colour forms can be restricted to a single reef only a few kilometres from the next (Konings, Cichlids Yearbook, vol. 3).
Morphology
As a Tropheops, this form is expected to show the genus's characteristic blunt head and thick, fleshy lips adapted for close-cropped grazing, with pronounced sexual dichromatism typical of the genus — territorial males usually far brighter than the duller or barred females. A specific published account of this form's own colour pattern does not exist, and none is invented here; readers should treat any colour description circulating in hobby channels as unverified until a formal account is available. Precise measurements — standard length, body depth ratio, fin ray counts — have not been published for this form, and none are estimated here beyond the genus-typical range. Sexual size dimorphism in mbuna generally favours males, which grow larger and hold territories, while females stay smaller and range more freely between reefs. Habitat
This form is documented from the Likoma-Chizumulu archipelago in the middle of the lake — Likoma Island, Maingano Island, Masimbwe Island and Ndomo Point — plus Mala Point without precise coordinates, and two Mozambique localities, Mbweca Rocks and Tumbi Point, on the nearby mainland shore. This mid-lake island cluster is a well-known centre of locally endemic mbuna diversity, and like other Tropheops it is expected to be a shallow, high-energy rocky-shore specialist. Lake Malawi's rocky shoreline experiences strong wave action near the surface, and mbuna reefs typically grade from bare, wave-swept rock in the shallows to more sheltered crevice habitat with depth. Water chemistry is essentially uniform throughout the lake's oxygenated upper layer — hard and strongly alkaline — so differences between reefs are mostly about rock structure, wave exposure and depth rather than water quality.
Feeding
No feeding study specific to this form exists. Tropheops as a genus are specialised algae grazers, using their thick, fleshy lips and comb-like teeth to crop the short algal turf from wave-washed rock in the shallow surge zone the genus typically favours, a habitat generally shallower than that used by many other Malawi mbuna. Mbuna have relatively long, coiled intestines adapted to a diet dominated by plant matter, and captive keepers generally avoid high-protein foods, since a rich diet is strongly linked to so-called Malawi bloat, an often fatal intestinal distension seen in aufwuchs-grazing cichlids fed inappropriately. In the wild, territorial males spend much of the day tending and re-grazing the same patch of algae, effectively farming it, and chase off both rival males and other grazing species that intrude on the territory.
Mating
Breeding males of this form are expected to hold and defend small rock territories in the standard Tropheops lek system, without pair bonding, displaying to ripe females that enter the site. Across Lake Malawi's cichlid assemblage as a whole, interspecific hybridisation is documented as rare — of well over a thousand species, only a small number of confirmed hybrid cases exist, several of them tied to human-mediated translocation of one parent species rather than natural crossing (Konings, Cichlids Yearbook, vol. 6) — a pattern consistent with the strong, colour-based assortative mating that is thought to keep narrowly distributed trade forms like this one distinct from their neighbours. As in other mbuna, males are expected to carry egg-spot markings on the anal fin that mimic the female's own eggs; during spawning, while the female collects the true fertilised eggs into her mouth, she is thought to peck at these spots, prompting the male to release sperm that she draws in, completing fertilisation inside her mouth. This egg-spot mechanism underlies mouthbrooding reproduction across Lake Malawi's cichlid radiation generally, and a male typically maintains and repeatedly refreshes his territory across many spawning cycles with different females rather than forming any lasting pair bond with one partner.
Breeding
Reproduction follows the standard mbuna pattern of maternal mouthbrooding, shared by every Tropheops. The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth after spawning and broods them alone, typically for around three to four weeks, before releasing free-swimming fry with no further care from either parent. Clutch size has not been documented for this form specifically. Comparably sized mbuna typically produce clutches in the range of 15 to 40 eggs, with larger, more experienced females producing more. A brooding female usually stops feeding or feeds only lightly for the duration, loses visible condition, and seeks out sheltered, less exposed parts of the reef until the fry are released; newly released fry often dart back into the mother's mouth at the first sign of danger for a few additional days before becoming fully independent.
In the aquarium
Tropheops sp. 'membe' is not an established aquarium staple and no husbandry account specific to it has been published. General Tropheops care applies: a long, well-lit tank with dense rockwork and multiple broken sightlines, hard alkaline water in the mid-20s Celsius, and an algae-forward, spirulina-based diet, since Tropheops are prone to digestive trouble on protein-heavy foods. A stocking ratio of one male to three or more females is standard practice for mbuna, spreading territorial and spawning attention and reducing stress on any single female. Weekly partial water changes and efficient filtration matter given the bioload of a densely stocked mbuna tank, and abrupt swings in water chemistry should be avoided, since Malawi cichlids are adapted to the lake's remarkably stable conditions.
Conservation
Tropheops sp. 'membe' has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and, as an undescribed form, is not currently eligible for formal assessment. Confined largely to a compact mid-lake island group, it shares the general exposure of narrow-range mbuna to localised ornamental collection and shoreline disturbance, risks that Lake Malawi's island and reef endemics carry disproportionately. Lake Malawi as a whole faces mounting pressure from overfishing of food species, sediment runoff tied to catchment deforestation, and a warming climate altering the lake's thermal stratification and deep-water oxygen levels. The ornamental trade is a comparatively minor pressure next to the food fishery by volume, and well-managed collection can give local communities a direct economic incentive to protect reef habitat, though that balance depends heavily on how any particular fishery is run.
