Taxonomy & naming
Maylandia sp. "Zebra Long Pelvic" is an undescribed Lake Malawi mbuna, recognised in the hobby and on the malawi.si database purely by this working label. It has no valid scientific name, no describing author, and no publication year, and none of these should be invented for it. The name follows the standard open-nomenclature convention: "sp." plus a descriptive tag in quotation marks marks a population that is field-recognisable but taxonomically undiagnosed.
The name itself is transparently descriptive, combining "Zebra" — the general term for the vertically barred body pattern shared across this Maylandia complex — with "Long Pelvic," referring to an elongated pelvic-fin trait documented in males of this population. Unlike many Malawi trade names, whose origin is opaque, this one states its defining character plainly.
The fish belongs to the wider Maylandia zebra complex, the rock-dwelling mbuna group whose genus name remains disputed between Maylandia (Meyer & Foerster, 1984) and Metriaclima (Stauffer et al., 1997); Konings and malawi.si both use Maylandia. It is not linked by name to any single described relative, and its closest formally described counterparts among the many zebra-type Maylandia have not been established.
Morphology
Maylandia sp. "Zebra Long Pelvic" follows the standard zebra-complex body plan — a moderately deep, laterally compressed mbuna with a blunt head and the small, closely packed grazing teeth typical of the genus. Adult size has not been separately documented for this form; genus-typical size for zebra-complex Maylandia runs roughly 3.5–4.5 in total length.
The documented distinguishing trait is in the fins rather than the body pattern: males of this population develop noticeably elongated, filamentous pelvic fins, extending well past the length typical of most Maylandia, a secondary sexual characteristic presumably used in courtship display. Body colouration follows the expected zebra pattern — blue ground colour with dark vertical bars in breeding males — though the fine detail of hue and bar count has not been documented specifically for this form. Females are expected to be plainer, without the extended pelvic fins, in keeping with the pattern across the genus.
Habitat
All four documented localities for this form — Chesese, Chewere, Mdoka, and Mdowa — sit within a few kilometres of one another on Lake Malawi's northern-central western shore, near the stretch of coast between Chilumba and Ngara. This tight clustering is typical of Malawi mbuna, whose populations are broken up by long stretches of open sand between rocky headlands, limiting movement and gene flow between otherwise similar habitats not far apart.
As a rock-dwelling zebra-complex Maylandia, the species is expected to occupy boulder and rock-face habitat rather than sand. Water conditions on this shore follow Lake Malawi's typical upper-column chemistry: roughly 24-28 degC, pH 7.7-8.6, hard and alkaline, with mbuna habitat generally found from a couple of metres to about 66 ft depth. No site-specific depth record exists for this form beyond those lake-wide figures.
Feeding
As a zebra-complex Maylandia, this form is presumed to be an aufwuchs grazer, rasping algae, diatoms, and associated micro-invertebrates from sunlit rock with the small, closely packed teeth typical of the genus. No feeding study specific to this population has been published; the assignment follows from genus membership and its rocky habitat rather than direct observation. The elongated pelvic fins that distinguish the males are a courtship trait, not a feeding adaptation, and do not indicate any departure from the genus-typical herbivorous diet.
That dentition, combined with a comparatively long gut adapted to digesting plant material, is a genus-wide trait rather than a feature confirmed specifically for this population. In practice this means the fish should be assumed to need the same plant-heavy diet as every other zebra-complex Maylandia, described further under In the aquarium below.
Mating
The elongated pelvic fins documented in males of this form are presumed, by analogy with similar traits in other mbuna, to function in courtship display rather than combat — extended fins are typically flared or quivered toward a female during approach rather than used against rival males. Beyond that inference, social structure has not been separately studied for this population; mature males are expected to hold individual rock territories and display to passing females, with aggression concentrated against similarly patterned rivals, following the standard mbuna pattern.
The mechanics of courtship follow the pattern documented across Malawi mbuna: a colour-bearing male performs a quivering lateral display in front of an approaching female, leading her toward his territory rather than pursuing her into open water. Persistent, low-level pressure toward non-receptive females is normal mbuna behaviour and is the main reason a single male is always kept with several females in captivity, spreading his attention and reducing the risk that any one female is harassed to exhaustion.
Breeding
Reproduction is presumed to follow the maternal mouthbrooding pattern fixed across Lake Malawi's haplochromines: the female takes eggs into her mouth at the male's territory, is drawn to the egg-spot markings on his anal fin, and takes in sperm that fertilises the clutch in her buccal cavity. She broods the eggs and larvae orally for roughly three weeks, fasting throughout, before releasing free-swimming fry. No clutch size has been documented for this specific form; genus-typical broods for similarly sized Maylandia run to a few dozen eggs, with no paternal care after fertilisation.
The egg-spot mechanism behind this process is one of the more distinctive features of Lake Malawi cichlid biology: the yellow-orange markings on the male's anal fin closely mimic the fish's own eggs in size and colour, and the female's instinct to gather stray eggs into her mouth is what draws her toward the male's vent, where she takes in sperm instead. This indirect fertilisation method, shared across virtually the entire haplochromine radiation of the lake, lets fertilisation happen without either fish releasing gametes into open water where they would be exposed and vulnerable.
In the aquarium
Maylandia sp. "Zebra Long Pelvic" is a scarce specialist fish, more likely to be found through dedicated Malawi cichlid importers than general retail, and its elongated pelvic fins make it a fish some keepers seek out specifically for that trait. Husbandry follows the standard zebra-complex Maylandia template: a tank of at least 47 in with dense rockwork over sand for territories and cover, hard alkaline water (pH roughly 7.8-8.6, temperature 24-28 degC), and a plant-forward diet of spirulina flake, pellet, and algae wafers, with meaty foods kept to a minimum to avoid the bloating syndrome associated with protein-heavy feeding in mbuna.
A single male with several females is the standard low-conflict grouping; the extended pelvic fins are delicate and can be damaged by aggressive tankmates or rough decor, so smooth rockwork without sharp edges is worth the extra care. As with all undescribed locality forms, keep it apart from other Maylandia populations to prevent hybridisation and preserve its value as a distinct trade form.
Conservation
Maylandia sp. "Zebra Long Pelvic" has never been formally described and carries no IUCN Red List assessment of any kind; a valid scientific name is required before evaluation can occur. Its range is confined to a short stretch of Malawi's north-central-western shore, an area subject to the pressures documented across the lake generally: shoreline sedimentation from catchment disturbance, a warming and increasingly stratified surface layer, and cumulative fishery pressure. Formal description would be the prerequisite for any future Red List evaluation; until then its status is properly recorded as unassessed.
The wider Lake Malawi cichlid fauna is already recognised as under pressure: the lake's fisheries and freshwater ecosystems face documented stress from catchment deforestation, agricultural runoff, and a warming, increasingly stratified water column, problems that fall on described and undescribed cichlids alike regardless of their taxonomic status. A trade name and a place in the aquarium hobby are not a substitute for formal assessment, but they do mean this form's population is at least being watched by people with a direct interest in its continued survival at its collection sites.
