Maylandia xanthos belongs to Maylandia, a genus of rock-dwelling mbuna split out of the larger Pseudotropheus/Metriaclima complex to house the classic barred "zebra" mbuna and their relatives — the deep-bodied, blunt-headed algae grazers that dominate much of Lake Malawi's rocky littoral. The genus name honours Hans-Joachim Mayland, a German aquarist and author whose books and fieldwork did much to popularise Malawi cichlids in the European hobby. Maylandia xanthos is accepted as a valid species in the Catalog of Fishes, the authority this atlas follows for Malawi cichlid nomenclature, and its epithet — Greek xanthos, "yellow" — describes the fish's most conspicuous field character: an overall golden-yellow body colour that departs from the barred blue pattern typical of many close relatives in the same genus, giving it an immediate, name-worthy distinction in the field.
Morphology
Maylandia xanthos carries the standard zebra-mbuna body plan shared across the genus: a deep, laterally compressed body, a blunt, rounded snout, and a small terminal mouth well suited to biting algae from rock surfaces rather than chasing prey. Its defining feature is colour rather than shape — an overall golden-yellow to orange-yellow body, a striking departure from the blue-black barring typical of many Maylandia species, and the character its species name is built around. Habitat
Maylandia xanthos is documented from Lumbaulo, a locality on Lake Malawi's northern shore near the Tanzania–Mozambique border region, an area whose rocky coastline has produced a number of geographically restricted mbuna populations. Consistent with the genus, it is a rock-dweller of the shallow-to-moderate littoral zone, living among boulders and rock faces where sunlight supports the dense algal growth the fish depends on for food. The water at these depths carries Lake Malawi's characteristic hard, alkaline chemistry and stable warm temperature typical of the rocky littoral. As with most locality-specific Maylandia, its confirmed range is narrow, and open sand or deep water separating rocky outcrops likely limits natural dispersal between this and neighbouring populations.
Feeding
Like other Maylandia, xanthos is expected to be a specialised aufwuchs grazer, using its blunt snout and small, closely packed teeth to scrape the dense mat of algae, diatoms, and associated micro-invertebrates coating sunlit rock surfaces. This algae-farming lifestyle is a defining trait of the zebra-mbuna group and typically comes with territorial defence of good grazing patches, since a well-maintained algal turf represents a valuable, monopolisable food resource on the rock face. Husbandry should follow the standard zebra-mbuna template: a heavily rock-built aquascape with abundant caves and broken sightlines, over a footprint of at least 47 in, and hard, alkaline water matching Lake Malawi — temperature roughly 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and moderate to high general hardness.
Diet should be predominantly vegetable-based, reflecting this species' algae-grazing natural diet: a quality spirulina-rich flake or pellet as the staple, with only occasional small invertebrate treats. Fatty, protein-heavy foods should be avoided, as they predispose Malawi cichlids to bloat. Given the intense territoriality typical of zebra-group mbuna, xanthos is best kept as one male with several females in a well-structured tank offering enough broken sightlines to diffuse aggression, and mixing it with other similarly coloured or shaped Maylandia species carries a real risk of hybridisation and should generally be avoided by keepers wanting to preserve pure locality stock.
